Mack's 5-Pack: Playing Santa, Nippon Connection, Wags, Tony B...and K-Port news

Playing Santa:

"In 2004, Mike Cameron(notes) played Santa, then had a serious outfield collision with Carlos Beltran(notes) the following August that put him on the disabled list for the remainder of the season. In 2005, Kris Benson(notes) (above) was Santa and was then traded to the Orioles a month after the party. It is believed his wife Anna's provocative attire at the party contributed to the trade. In 2007, John Maine(notes) was Santa and had an injury-plagued season, and last year it was Mike Pelfrey

Nippon Connection:

The Mets have had nine Japanese-born players appear in at least one game. The list includes: Takashi Kashiwada (1997), Hideo Nomo (1998), Masato Yoshii (1998-1999), Satoru Komiyama (2002), Tsuyoshi Shinjo (2001, 2003), Kazuhisa Ishii (2005), Shinjo Takatsu (2005), Kazuo Matsui (2004-2006) and Ken Takahashi (2009

Billy Wagner:

So the Red Sox trade for Billy Wagner, with Wagner agreeing on the condition that they not pick up his option. However, he allows them to offer him arbitration, apparently not understanding how type-A status will put him in the Juan Cruz class. Well, the Braves had other plans. Before they even heard back from the two type-A relievers to whom they'd offered arbitration, Braves were so eager to give up their first round pick that they signed Wagner to a $7-million one-year deal, with a $6.25 vesting option. Rafael Soriano then decided to accept arbitration, and signed for $7.25 to pitch in 2010. So the Braves could have just held onto Soriano instead of signing Wagner. Wagner gives them similar production on a similar contract, but comes at the cost of draft picks. And then Brandon Lyon and Mike Gonzalez (the Braves other type A) sign multi-year contracts with uncompetitive teams that had just finally gotten out from under the costly contracts of Jose Valverde and Danys Baez. Teams are giving away draft picks and $5-7 million/year contracts for the sake of approximately five runs a year. I’m lost.  Can someone please tell me what’s going on?

Tony Bernazard:

The Mets miss Tony Bernazard. Please don't misunderstand this; Bernazard deserved to get fired last summer for his various displays of temper and outrageous conduct, and I'm not advocating that he be re-hired. It's just that the Mets seem all too willing to let the market come to them this offseason, when their situation practically demanded that they shoot themselves out of a cannon and go after the few difference-makers available in this weak free-agent class.  -  NYDN

Kingsport:

The Appalachian League has announced it has implemented a new format for the 2010 playoffs, which will begin on September 1, 2010. For the first time, four teams will qualify for the 2010 Appalachian League postseason with the second place team in each division now joining the two division winners. At the conclusion of the 68-game regular season, those four teams will then compete in a two-round playoff. While the structure of how the teams will play each other in the first round has not been determined, each match-up in the first round will be a best-of-three series. The two winners of the first round will then meet in a best-of-three series to determine the Appalachian League Champion. "I feel that with this change to our playoff format we will create added enthusiasm for our cities, fans, and players alike," said Lee Landers, President of the Appalachian League. "This will also create added excitement for teams competing for playoff spots down the stretch."
