Johan Santana:
I love the idea. Streamline back to a bunch of young kids and mid level cheap players while actually building a farm system. It would take a few years and those would really be LEAN years. But would it be worse than what we have now?
Think of the glory years of the Mets - the late 60's/early 70's, and the mid-to-late 80's. Two different periods in baseball yes, but what was similar? A core nucleus of home grown talent - either brought up all the way through the system or guys plucked from other team's farm systems in exchange for some of our stars. (Remember we got Darling and Walt Terrel - who turned into HoJo - for Mazzilli)
Could it work? I think it could. But the Mets would have to be totally committed to the process. In addition, the way to win over this town - or at least the fans they have lost - would be to be more fan friendly. Roll back some prices. Re-introduce some of the old-time traditions like Banner Day, Family Day, and the Old Timers Game. Sure the quality of play on the field might suck for two to three years (again, worse than now?), but knowing that the team was taking its time and doing something with a sense of commitment - you'd win a lot of patience that way. - metspolice
Todd Zeile:
As we wait for the blizzard of Dec 2009 to hit us and of course any word that Jason Bay has unturned all his rocks and realizes he needs to sign with the Mets there is a fluff piece in the NY Post about former Met Todd Zeile. He played for the Mets back in 2000 and 2001 and again played his last game in a Met uniform in 2004. The 44 year old seems hell bent in breaking down the doors in Hollywood. He has made a movie that he is trying to get released next year that he calls "what amounts to a feature that is a faith-based version of 'Crash'. There are 10 story lines in Los Angeles around the 10 freeway. The faith component of it is that all Ten commandments are depicted in the journey" -

Bob Klapisch:
Trade Santana?
Give me a break. Ya know, if you can trade ballplayers and get a prospect compensation for stealing a manager, why stop there?
I never met the guy, but after reading Bob's column on Santana, I'd send him to Boston for the cable rights to Peter Gammons.
While I'm at it, I could banish Tej and Toby to cover Russian volleyball, and then I'd have a lock on the Mets minor league reporting.
Then, I'd ship off Adam Rubin for that foreign guy with that great one hour show on Sundays on CNN. No, not the medical dude.
Lastly, how about a three way with Jon Heyman, Omar Minaya, and the Long Island Ducks?
I may have something here...

Mack, I wonder in hindsight if Klapisch was right. No idea what he wrote, so I could not tell you, but Santana was on his sharp decline, it turned out - had a decent but not great 2010, missed 2011, then was crappy in 2012, and done.
Great veterans seem great - until they decline. Just ask Robby Cano.
