Jeff Francouer:
“I had a good first month and I’ve had just an awful two weeks.” - No. Francoeur hit well for two weeks, but he’s hit poorly for almost a month. After drawing eight walks in his first eight games, he’s drawn two since in 25 games. When he was selective, he hit well. For some reason, he lost that and is just failing at the plate, 0 for his last 15. Whatever lessons the Mets tried to teach him didn’t leave a lasting impression.- link
Brett Harper:
First baseman Brett Harper became the first Barnstormer to be signed by a Major League organization during the 2010 season as his contract has been purchased by the Oakland Athletics, it was announced late Friday evening. He will join Oakland’s Class AAA affiliate in Sacramento, CA. Harper was scratched from the Lancaster lineup prior to Friday night’s game, but the signing was not made official until after the contest. At the time he was signed, Harper was tied for the Atlantic League lead in home runs (6) and led the circuit in doubles (9), extra-base hits (15), total bases (56) and slugging percentage (.718). He had batted safely in 17 of 19 games, hitting .372, the fourth best mark in the league. - link
Juan Lagares:
Stock Up: The Savannah sand Gnats are currently clicking on all cylinders and one of the reasons is “veteran” Lagares. He burst on to the scene in 2007 as a hot shit prospect infielder who scouts were saying that he would replace Jose Reyes. Juan went through a few growing years, switched to the outfield, and is back playing Savannah for the fourth straight season. The good news: .305/.321/.539/.860, and leads the team with 27-RBIs. The even better news… he only turned 21 this past March.
Lagares is a perfect example of someone you shouldn’t give up on early. We tend to forget how young these 16-year olds were when we first crossed paths with him. If he was stateside and went to college, his class would still be in session.
Wilfredo Tovar:
Stock Up: Looks like the mets might have found another 19-year old Latin shortstop to brag about. Wilfredo Tovar comes out of the DSL system and really didn’t do anything that special last season for the GCL Mets (.243/.294/.318/.611). For some reason, he was called upon this month to go to St. Luic and start in place of Reese Havens (moved to 2B) and Luis Nieve (DL). So far, this sure is working: .400/.419/.500/.919. Yes, it’s only 30-Abs but it’s worth noting at this point in the season.
Reese Havens:
Stock up: Havens was promoted to Binghamton after Friday night’s game for St. Lucie. The former first round draft pick is no longer kicking the ball around at short and has become a full time second baseman, in hopes of getting to Queens after Luis Castillo’s contract runs out after the 2011 season. No one is going to ever award Havens a Gold Glove, but did play A+ this season with zero errors in the field. In addition, his bat is coming around… at Lucy this year: .281/.369/.509/.878, 3-HRs in 57-AB. Look, Havens should be at AA and the rest of this season will be a good test for him. He also will fit in well with a lineup of Nieuwenhuis, Evans, and Lutz. No pitching around here.
