6-12 Gnat Gnotes

Tonight:      RAINED OUT AGAIN !!!

Tonight, the Gnats and Charleston RiverDogs are scheduled for a game and a half. The

teams will first finish the suspended game, scheduled for nine innings, that began in Charleston on

Sunday. Following the completion of game one, the two teams will play a seven-inning game for the

nightcap. The teams are now scheduled to play two seven-inning games on Wednesday.

Last Game:

Sunday’s game was suspended with the Gnats leading the RiverDogs 1-0 in the bottom

of the fourth inning. RHP

Marcos Camarena had thrown 3.1 scoreless innings for the Gnats in a

spot start. CF

Travis Taijeron drove home leadoff man Brandon Brown with a sacrifice fly in the

third inning for the game’s only run. The game’s completion and Monday’s regularly scheduled

game was postponed by rain on Monday.

Now Pitching: Randy Fontanez

is scheduled to be on the mound when game one resumes. He

threw 2.2 scoreless innings Friday in the first game of the series at Charleston with two strikeouts

and no walks. He has thrown at least two innings in each of his last five relief appearances, and

gone three innings or more twice.

Now Pitching:

RHP Logan Verrett is scheduled to make his fifth start of the year for the Gnats

and his second since his return from the disabled list with impingement in his right shoulder. Verrett

held the Asheville Tourists to one run on three hits in 6.1 innings in his last start last Tuesday when

he earned his first professional win. In 19.1 innings this year, his strikeout to walk ratio is an even 4

(20 K/5 BB). The Mets selected Verrett in the third round of the 2011 draft out of Baylor University

where he majored in Business and earned second-team All Big-12 honors in 2011. Verrett finished

his Baylor career with a 19-10 record and a 3.54 ERA in 53 games pitched, including 34 starts. In

246.1 innings, he fanned 257 batters and walked only 73. His 3.52 strikeout to walk ratio is the

second-best all time at Baylor (behind Rick Dusek’s 3.58) and his 257 strikeouts are seventh alltime,

but third, behind only former Major Leaguers

Jason Jennings and Kip Wells, among all

pitchers who played three years or fewer. Verrett helped lead Calallen High School in Corpus

Christi to the 2008 Texas Class 4A state title in his senior year. It was the school’s third state title in

the decade and second for Verrett, who contributed to the 2005 state title team as a freshman.

Verrett earned the 4A Player of the Year Award (Texas Sports Writers Association) and multiple

HS All-America honors (MaxPreps, EA Sports). Verrett graduated from high school Magna Cum

Laude and won the school’s academic excellence award four times. The Gnats are a perfect 4-0

when Verrett starts and have supported him with 6.25 runs per game (25 runs/4 games).
