GNATS AND TOURISTS SPLIT DOUBLE DIP THURSDAY

Savannah, GA - The Savannah Sand Gnats earned a double-header split with the Asheville Tourists, rallying for a 5-4 win in the nightcap after a 2-0 defeat in game one. The Gnats (35-24) took two of three games from the first-place Tourists (41-19) in the three-game series.

Down 4-0 entering the bottom of the third of game two, the Gnats scored five unanswered runs to take a 5-4 lead. In the fourth, three doubles, one each from 2B TJ Rivera, CF Travis Taijeron and 1B Brian Harrison helped produce two runs to draw the Gnats within a run at 4-3. In the fifth, 3B Brandon Brown launched a two-run home run to put Savannah in front.

In game two, Gnats’ starter Michael Fulmer fought his way through five innings to earn the win, yielding four runs on five hits and two walks while fanning four. TJ Chism induced three groundballs in the ninth to lock up his 10th save in as many chances.

All of the scoring in game one occurred on one swing. In the second inning, 2B Taylor Featherston walked and LF Brian Humphries followed with a two-run home run over the right field wall off Savannah starter Rafael Montero.

Montero worked 6 innings, yielded just the two runs on six hits, walking one and striking out four. However, his counterpart for Asheville, Tyler Anderson, shut out the Gnats through six innings. Jefri Hernandez worked a 1-2-3 ninth for his ninth save.

The Gnats, who had only three hits in game one, did not get a runner to third base, and advanced only one runner to second.

The Gnats are on the road in Charleston Friday through Sunday, but return home for Dollar Monday presented by Kroger, the Savannah Morning News and E93 to take on the RiverDogs on Monday, June 11.
