MARON’S SINGLE BOUNCES HOPPERS 2-1 SATURDAY

Savannah, GA - Two runs has been the magic number each of the last three nights at Historic Grayson Stadium. Saturday, the Savannah Sand Gnats defeated the Greensboro Grasshoppers 2-1 in front of 2,639 fans in the third straight game in the series that the winning team has scored two runs.

The Gnats (33-22) took a 2-1 lead in the bottom of the seventh when C Cam Maron drove a single up the middle off the glove of ‘Hoppers 2B Austin Barnes, to chase home 2B Brandon Brown with the go-ahead run. The single extended Maron’s season-best hitting streak to six straight games.

Savannah scored the first run of the game when 3B Aderlin Rodriguez crushed a solo home run, his ninth of the year, to leftfield in the sixth inning. Greensboro (39-17) evened the game in the top of the 7th on a solo homerun by 1B Ryan Rieger off reliever Marcos Camarena.

Savannah starter Jacob deGrom threw six shutout innings with five strikeouts and one walk to lower his ERA to 1.48 in 30.1 innings with the Gnats. He has thrown at least six innings in four of his five Savannah starts.

Reliever TJ Chism stranded the tying run at third base in the eighth, and, with the help of a double-play, faced the minimum three batters in the ninth to record the save. He is a perfect 9-for-9 in save opportunities in 2012.
