LAST GAME: Blake Forsythe led off the bottom of the 10th inning with a walk-off home run as the B-Mets defeated the Bowie Baysox, 3-2 in the series opener last night at NYSEG Stadium. Both teams were held scoreless for the first five innings; Xorge Carrillo put the B-Mets on the board with a sacrifice fly in the bottom of the sixth. In the seventh, Luis Martinez hit a sacrifice fly to even the score. Richard Lucas hit a solo home run in the bottom of the frame to regain the lead for the B-Mets. In the ninth, Jeff Walters walked Buck Britton with the bases loaded to tie the game, but Forsythe’s bomb won it for Binghamton in the tenth.
BINGHAMTON STARTER: RHP Greg Peavey makes his fourth start of the season for Binghamton and first against the Baysox. He is fresh off of a victory over the Reading Fightin Phils, where he allowed three runs over six innings. His best start came against Harrisburg on August 2, where he threw six shutout innings and only allowed one hit. In 21.0 innings with Binghamton, Peavey has allowed a .203 batting average against. He began 2013 with Las Vegas (AAA) and went 4-3 with a 6.00 ERA in 38 relief appearances. The Mets drafted him in the sixth round of the 2010 draft out of Oregon State University.
BOWIE STARTER: LHP Eduardo Rodriguez makes his ninth start of the season with the Baysox and his first against Binghamton. He beat the Erie Seawolves in his last start after throwing five shutout innings. He also struck out a season-high eight batters. In four road starts, he is 0-2 with a 7.11 ERA. In 39.2 innings opponents are hitting .265 against him. He began 2013 with the Frederick Keys, and went 6-4 with a 2.85 ERA in 14 starts. He was signed by the Orioles as a non-drafted free agent in January 2010.
TO WIN THE EASTERN DIVISION: The magic number to win the Eastern Division for the B-Mets is 2. A win by the B-Mets tonight combined with a Trenton Thunder loss would clinch it. Binghamton already has an automatic postseason berth clinched. Binghamton has not played in the postseason since 2004, and has not won the division since 2000.
WALK-OFF HOMER: Blake Forsythe’s home run in the 10th inning last night gave Binghamton their fifth walk-off win in 2013. They have two walk-off bombs, and both have come against the Baysox. On June 16, Joe Bonfe hit a solo home run in the bottom of the ninth inning. The B-Mets are 5-5 in walk-off games.
80 WINS: The 2013 Binghamton Mets are the fourth team in franchise history to win 80 games in one season. They also accomplished at least 80 victories in 1994, 1998, and in 2000. In each of those seasons the team won 82 games, which is the most in franchise history.
DEFENSIVE MADNESS: Injuries to Wilfredo Tovar and Cory Vaughn caused several position changes for the B-Mets last night. Alonzo Harris moved from centerfield to second base. Harris began his professional career as an infielder, and had not played there in over a year. Blake Forsythe moved from catcher to right field . Forsythe played one game in the outfield in 2012 with St. Lucie (High-A).
AUGUST PITCHING NUMBERS: Despite a .233 team batting average in August, Binghamton is 13-5 during this month. The pitching staff has led the way, posting a league-best 2.33 ERA in the month.
FIVE HITS OR FEWER: Binghamton tallied only five hits in last night’s win. That was the fifth win in August where Binghamton has collected five hits or fewer.
ONE-RUN WINS: The B-Mets won their 26th one-run game of the season last night. Six of Binghamton’s last eight wins have been by one run.
NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets conclude their three-game series against the Baysox on Wednesday night at NYSEG Stadium. Binghamton sends RHP Logan Verrett to the mound against RHP Tyler Wilson for Bowie. First pitch is at 6:35 PM
