Sunday at Citi Field, the Mets entered the all-star break
with a bang as Kirk Nieuwenhuis hit 3 homers as the Mets finish a three game
sweep of the Dbacks 5-3. Nieuwenhuis did what no Met has ever done becoming the
first Met to ever hit three homers in a home game. His first dinger came in the bottom of the 2nd
inning, his 1st on the year to make it 1-0. The Dbacks tied the game in the top of the 3rd
off Jonathon Niese when Chris Owings came home on a ground out by Nick Ahmed.
In the bottom of the 3rd the Met power surge provided a 4-1
lead. Daniel Murphy gave the Mets the
lead with a solo homer, his 5th on the year. Lucas Duda walked and then Nieuwenhuis hit
his 2nd homer of the game and 2nd of the year and the Mets
had a 3 run lead. Paul Goldschmidt hit
an opposite field homer off Niese in the 4th to make it 4-2, for Goldschmidt
his 21st on the year.
Nieuwenhuis hit his 3rd dinger off the right field foul pole
in the 5th for the Mets final run. In the 7th David
Peralta’s RBI Single scored Yasmany Tomas to cap the scoring. Niese continued his recent resurgence going 6
2/3 allowing 5 hits all 3 runs (earned) while striking out 3. He gets the win
improving to 5-8. Rubby De La Rosa took
the loss dropping 6-5. Jenrry Mejia made his first appearance since his suspension
retiring Owings on a fly to right. Bobby Parnell pitched a scoreless 8th;
Jeurys Familia pitched the 9th for his 27th save on the
year. Nieuwenhuis went 3 for 4 on the
day with the 3 homers and 4 RBI, the obvious offensive star of the game. With the win the Mets sweep the three game
set for the Diamondbacks and have now won 4 straight. They are currently 47-42
overall and 32-14 at home. The Mets go
into the break trailing the Nationals by 2 games in the NL East. Jacob deGrom
is off to Cincinnati to be the Met representative In the All-Star Game. The
Mets have 4 days off. They are back in action on Friday night in St. Louis to
start a 3 game set with the Cardinals.
