DOWN UNDER: Mets Minor League Playoff Recap - Tom Brennan

DOWN UNDER: Mets Minor League Playoff Recap - Tom Brennan

As previously noted, Kingsport lost its opening playoff round 2 games to 1, and the two other Mets Minors playoff teams, Binghamton and Savannah, are underway. Binghamton came in to tonight with their backs to the wall, down 2 games to none in their best of 5. Savannah was tied 1-1 in their best of 3, also facing a win-or-go-home game.

So, on this pressure-filled Saturday night, there was unfortunately two losers.  The minor league season for the Mets organization has come to a close without any of its 3 playoff teams advancing beyond the first round, sad to say.

BINGHAMTON:

Gabe Ynoa was awful, surrendering 2 homers in a very short stint.  Relievers were stellar, striking out 9 in 5.1 innings, but again there was a lack of offense on a team missing Conforto, Nimmo, and Cecchini.  A 4-2 final loss.  See ya next spring, boys.

Savannah:

The Gnats sent Casey Delgado to the mound, but only after getting the go-ahead from Casey Stengel and Carlos Delgado.

Kidding aside, he was terrific, and the Gnats were locked in a scoreless duel until Casey gave up an 8th inning 2 run homer.  The Gnats responded in the 9th, scoring a run but falling a run short, 2-1, despite 8 hits and 3 walks.  A magnificent season ends in disappointing fashion.  Have a great winter, gents, it was a season to be proud of.

And so I sign off on my Down Under game updates, as I have run out of games to recap.  All seasons are over.  It's been fun.  Keep rooting for our minor leaguers.

Only 1300 people attended the last Sand Gnat game.

Pitiful example from a pitiful town.

1,300 is truly awful attendance, even if the team is leaving town. After a bad April, the Gnat won 70% of the time. And that was the response? Awful. Hopefully a much more enthusiastic fan base next year in Columbia.

What 'sthe average attendance around that league? Are the Gnats at the bottom?

Tom Brennan --- Thanks for keeping us all abreast of the MnL happenings all season. Will you be doing the same for the AFL and various Winer leagues, too?

@ Metsiac, thanks. TBD on the AFL and Winter League coverage.

The most meaningful Winter League happening I can recall, not that you asked, was Jeurys Familia two winters back after having his elbow cleaned out. He was shaky until his last 3 outings, when he threw 4.2 innings and struck out 11. Who does that?? I knew right then he'd be real good - but not this good. He's been the glue all year.

I do not know the attendance figures for the league offhand, but for a win-or-advance-or-lose-and-go-home playoff game after a highly successful season, that attendance should have been 3 or 4 times that #, in my opinion.
