Mack’s Morning Report – 7-5-15 – Random Thoughts

Good morning.

This post is getting the toughest for me to come up with things both entertaining and constructive. 2015 has been a very difficult year for both Mets fans and writers, even though the team still is only in second place and only two and a half games out of a wild card slot. Oh, to only have those games against both the Cubs and Pirates back.

Pitcher Gonzalez Germen was designated for assignment by the Cubs after appearing in six games.

By the way, two of the more talented young pitchers in the system are currently rehabbing in Florida for the GCL Mets after going through Tommy John Surgery. John Magliozzi (17th round – 2013) and Chris Flexen (14th round – 2012). Flexen went 8-1, 2.09 for Kingsport in 2013 before having arm problems the following year for Savannah. Both ‘Mags’ and ‘Flex’ pitched a scoreless inning yesterday.

On the other hand, I wouldn’t be surprised if the Mets don’t shut down RP Vic Black soon. He really has been quite unsuccessful during his rehab stint and, after last night for Vegas, his rehab ERA is 15.88 in eight outings. The good news is Jenrry Mejia is expected to return to Queens next week, probably replacing one of the ‘Torres brothers’ or Logan Verrett. My first guess for a demotion would have been Hansel Robles but the Mets have seem to have grown confident in his ability recently. They especially love his 95+ fastball which has created an 0.81 WHIP in the last even games.

I don't think Robles will be demoted any time soon.

The Torres boys have been Torrible so likely one of them.

Sandy needs to bite the bullet and drop alex torres eventually, whether its tuesday or when Blevins ever actually comes back.
It is what it is. Mazzoni I don't believe is turning any heads, and I have no idea whats up with the low A ball pitcher who was PTBNL in that deal.
What does alex offer this team? He's good (when finding the strikezone) against righties. Mets have PLENTY of guys who are good against righties.

Fulmer for SP5

Verrett, Leathersich, Black, Edgin, Familia, Wheeler for wipeout bullpen.

Metsiac said...

Absolutely, Ernest. I don't know if Alex can be optioned, but he's excess baggage right now. Oddly enough, we've got 2 LHRPs, 3 before Leather was sent down, but no LOOGY among them.at least not until Blevins returns. I like what I've seen from Gilmartin.

I wonder what the future holds for Verrett, a starter until this year. Two teams liked him enough to draft him in the Rule V, but returned him because they couldn't send him to the minors. you'd think they might want to trade for him, in which case he could be sent to AAA.That would clear a spot for Mejia without having to make a decision on Alex.

Metsiac said...

Michael, you really don't want to keep Parnell, Mejia, and Blevins?

I don't agree with Michael full bullpen idea, but i think we can all agree that ownership will NOT be paying for Parnell and Blevins services next year.

Zozo said...

Does anyone know Blevins ETA? We aren't going anywhere this year so hopefully we go into complete sell mode. So please get what you can for all the free agents to be like Parnell, Blevins, Colon and Murphy...

Ernest -

Don't write off 2016 for Parnell this early.

Besides having a potentially historically great starting staff, the pen stands to be one of MLB's best as well. But there's only 7 members. They'll have to make choices. I like Wheeler as an 8th inning guy. Whomever isn't included, I just hope they can trade off to improve the offense/defense, i.e., the areas in which we're severely lacking.

Also I just read that Scott Biras said this
“With TV rights and the general fund contribution and everything — every club, before they sell a ticket, they’re making $120 million,” Boras said. “There’s a lot of revenue in this game to pay a lot of players and keep players at home.”

There you go guys we have our guideline to go by...

Ernest Dove said...

Mack,

Parnell is making almost $4mil this year. You seriously believe Mets will pay a reliever like this 4mil next year? He's loooooong gone.

Robles/Black/edgin/leathersich etc etc will all battle as his 'cheap' replacement in late innings.

Mack Ade said...

Ernest -

No, I wouldn't pay Parnell this kind of money but I wouldn't still be paying Brett Saberhagen either.

I've seen a lot of strange things the Mets do over the years, especially old closers (like the dude from Milwaukee).

Ernest Dove said...

What the Mets NEED to do is give Familia (im too lazy to check his team control status) a 3 year extension and make him at LEAST one of the top 5-10 relievers in baseball. Gotta send a new message sometime That homegrown talent that succeeds get rewarded.

Metsiac said...

Ernest, I guess I'm not part of"everyone" then. Of course we can't predict yet hoe far back Parnell will bounce, but if he's the"old" Bobby he's a keeper. As for Blevins, how much more will he cost than this year? Why did we sign him as our only true LOOGY if we don't want to keep him?

I know that Sandy' MO seems to be to let go of every vet he signs (see Byrd, Hairston, Hawkins, et al) who is actually productive, but this would be ludicrous even for him, unless Blevins can't fully recover from the injury and is ineffective.

If he again chooses the "cheap" route after his "willing to overpay" comments last week, he'll once again reinforce his hypocrisy. You may not like the Wilpons, but as far as I know they're not micromanagers. If they didn't stop him from spending freely on Grandy, Cuddy, Colon, and Chris Young, I don't see them standing in his way if he wants to keep Bobby and Blevins.

Metsiac said...

Speaking of homegrown talent, maybr it's just my old man memory fa i ling, but I can't think of ONE player in Sandy's five drafts who has become a successful MLer. Every young player I see was draftrd either by Omar or by another org (Wheeler, Travis, et al).

If I'm right, is he leading MLB in draft futility, or are there other teams who have as dismal a 5-year record?

Yes, I know we have some due "soon", but still...

Ernest Dove said...

The more I think about, the more I actually don't hate the wilpons, for the exact reason you mention metsiac.
Its not their fault that CY, Grandy, mayberry jr and Cuddyer didn't pan out. When owners approve of about $90 mil being spent on 4 players, u kinda expect those investments to be enough to go with what u already have.

The question is: y dont they spend now?
The question on their side im sure is: how much should we dump on players that might also not work out?

I assume you mean the three year extension for Familiar would begin past his arbitration years.

Seniority seems to play such a big deciding role that I would be shocked if Verrett wasn't the one to go when Mejia comes back.

The interesting thing will be when Goeddel returns. My guess is they keep him in the minors until on of the Torres boys blows up in a key situation and forces their hand.

After Zozo's post , I now understand. The Mets are Jeffy's chance to go "See, daddy, I AM a good businessman! I'm making money off the baseball team!" And Fred will go "That's nice, son. Now you and Sandy go play with your baseball team. Just don't ask me for any more money". as he builds his billion-dollar megamall.

I believe the 'mega mall' you speak of next to CitiField was voted down last week for being illegal

That Adam Smith said...

It's not unthinkable, given the DW situation, that they give Murphy a QO for 2016 and he takes it. For all of his flaws, he's a professional hitter and there just aren't that many of those in the org (or available cheap. He'll be relatively expensive, but it's only a one year commitment, and the devil you know... I don't see both of Colon and Niese on the team past the deadline. I think they move one for whatever they can get and go back to a 5 man rotation, with someone like Logan Verret or maybe Gee (if he can get his head together) or Montero (if he's actually alive somewhere) taking an occasional spot start down the stretch.

Metsiac said...

Ernest, IMO they set the budget and Sandy spends it. He's said he's willing to overpay, so that seems to indicate the money is there.

Mack Ade said...

Right now, there is a very good chance that the Mets will go into the all-star break with no diagnosis for Wright AND a 3rd place team.

Steve from Norfolk said...

Mack,

Thank you. Guess I should read the big city press more. But, look at the good side. Now they can put some of that money into the team, where they really wanted to!

It's still a little early for results from SA's drafts, considering he drafted mostly HS players. They're about on schedule. If any break out soon, it'll be Conforto, and he was hi level college. Any other team would have started him at AA, and he'd already be here.
