Tuesday night in Washington, Kirk Nieuwenhuis snapped a 7 all tie in the top of the 8th inning with a pinch hit home run, The
Mets roar from behind to beat the Nationals 8-7. Matt Harvey toed the rubber
for the Mets in this one. He came out with a lot to prove, but so did the
Nats. They scored twice off Harvey in
the bottom of the first inning as they strung together 4 straight hits highlighted
by RBI singles by Clint Robinson and Ian Desmond. In the top of the 2nd the Mets got
one right back off Jordan Zimmermann as David Wright hit a solo homer, his 3rd
on the year and it was 2-1. In the 2nd Anthony Rendon’s RBI single
made it 3-1. In the 6th it all unraveled for Harvey. Yunel Escobar singled.
Robinson walked; Desmond reached on a fielder’s choice to load the bases.
Harvey struck out Wilson Ramos. Then Michael Taylor singled up the middle. The ball
skipped over Yoenis Cespedes’ glove in center and rolled to the wall as all
runners scored making it 7-1. Harvey left the game lasting 5 1/3 allowing 8
hits a career tying 7 runs (all earned) walking 2 and striking out 6. But then the Mets got to work. In the top of
the 7th, the Mets as they have this entire month stormed back.
Wright singled. Michael Conforto walked. Wilmer Flores singled home Wright to
make it 7-2. Pinch hitter Juan Uribe walked.
Granderson then walked forcing home Conforto to make it 7-3. That
brought up Cespedes with the bases juiced and hit a 3 run double down the left
field line to make it 7-6. Daniel Murphy then walked. Wright walked to load the
bases once again and Lucas Duda walked bringing home Cespedes and the game was
tied at 7. In the top of the 8th,
the Nats brought in Jonathon Papelbon. With
2 outs Kirk Nieuwenhuis pinch hit for Addison Reed and hit a solo homer, his 4th
on the year for an 8-7 Met lead! Reed pitched the 7th and picks up
the win. His first as a Met, he’s now 1-0 for the Mets and 3-2 on the season.
Tyler Clippard pitched a scoreless 8th. Jeurys Familia pitched the 9th
for this 38th save. With the win the Mets improve to 16 games over
.500 to match their season high at 77-61. They are 32-37 on the road and most importantly
they increase their lead over the Nats in the NL East to 6 games. Wednesday
night the Mets go for the sweep. Jacob deGrom (12-7 2.40) goes for the Mets,

Unreal...I love this team and I love the late game heroics and refusing to quit...but I can't take these heart attack games.
Oh boy. This team is so much fun to watch. Everyone is chipping in, and it's great to have a few all-stars like Cespedes and Wright who come through when you need them.
This is our payback for the past 7 years!
And YC, I have to say, give the man $175m. I don't care, he's worth it.
And how about that bullpen?!

This might be the most incredible regular season win I have ever seen.
And the greatest part about of all of this is three posted without one mention of that guy that started the game for the Mets
Great game, but as exciting as it was, what we really saw last night was more "the Nats are definitely not a playoff team" than a great Mets' performance. Their bullpen is in way worse shape than ours. That said, I'll be sad if (when) we don't re-sign Cespedes, even though whoever signs him is likely going to overpay by a lot. Also, I need to say that in this series, I don't think that TC has made a single wrong bullpen move. I mention that more because he's made so many terrible moves than that I think he's been particularly brilliant. There just haven't been too many tough choices. The biggest stretch was Alvarez instead of O'Flaherty, and really, regardless of how many big league hitters Alvarez has faced this year (zero), would anyone in their right mind have brought in Flaherty to face Harper? Great win in any case. Let's put them out of their misery tonight.
