4 NEW METS (Lujan, Hubbard, Valdez, Figuereo), Hayden, Monasterios... and Kevin Kobel

John Lujan

The Mets selected RHP John Lujan in the AAA portion of the Rule V draft:
5-10-84 6-1 200 - - 2009: Birmingham AA – 3-5, 4.45, 1.35, 37 appearances, 58.2-IP, 51-K, 28-BB

Marshall Hubbard:

1B – 4-6-82 6-2, 215 L/R  -
2009: West Tenn. AA - .271/.380/.434/814 in 447-AB, 14-HR, 70-RBI

Rolando Valdez:

RHP – 1-8-86 – 6-1, 191 – R/R
2009: AA – 1-0, 5.01, 1.58, in 17 appearances, 32.1-IP, 28-K, 2-BB

Hayden Beard:

The Mets’ Hayden Beard was chosen in the AA phase of the Rule V draft by the San Diego Padres.

Johan Figuereo:

RHP – 6-2, 195 – R/R
2009: NYP SS – 0-1, 2.92, 1.22, in 17 appearances, 24.2-IP, 23-K, 9-BB

Carlos Monasterios

The Mets selected Carlos Monasterios which left many people saying "who", the young right reliever who was part of the Bobby Abreu trade wasn't on any ones radar but the situation got even stranger. The Mets turned around and traded Monasterios to the Dodgers for cash considerations. Maybe, this is part of a bigger trade that is in the works since the Mets are interested in two of the Dodgers relievers, otherwise; they passed on the 7th pick which isn't consistent with past practices.

Jeff Francoeur

Jeff Francoeur's surgery to repair a torn ligament in his left thumb turned out to be more complex than originally expected, although the outfielder still expects to be ready for spring training. Because Francoeur played with the injury for the final month of the season, the thumb ligament wore down and shriveled, necessitating a transplant from his wrist. Francoeur first got the cast off last week. He expects to begin hitting off a tee on Jan.1 and be cleared to hit pitches two weeks later. -

Kevin Kobel

Name occurred to me, but I placed him exclusively in 1979, when a letter from a four-year-old appeared in the Mets yearbook proclaiming the lefty as the kid's favoritest player ever, or words to that effect. By forgetting his 1980 (7.03 ERA), I feel I did both Kevin and his Kobelphile a historical service. -

Hey Mack. How does the AAA rule 5 draft work?

none of the players the Mets got today have to kept on the 40-man roster

the only one that had to, was picked in the first round, but he was shipped off to Los Angeles as a PTBNL in a previous trade
