Mack – LHRP

We continue to sit and await the results of the Josh Edgin MRI, I’m starting to think that the Mets use the Veteran’s Administration to achieve their medical goals.
The least that’s going to come out of this is an inflammation report and, at least, 7-10 days not pitching.

Reporters are way ahead of me speculation on the alternatives available to the Mets… Dario Alvarez, Sean Gilmartin, Jack Leathersich, and Scott Rice. Right now, Rice looks to be alternate #1, though it still would take a 40-man move to get him on the active roster.

Me?

Well, let’s first look at the RHRP options that this team does have:

Jenrry Mejia, Jeurys Familia, Vic Black, Dillon Gee, Eric Goeddel, Cory Mazzoni, Rafael Montero, and Carlos Torres.

And then there’s Bobby Parnell, who should be ready sometime in mid-April.

Mejia, Familia, Black, and Torres will definitely go north.

The rest of the pen will come from this list since it seems like every pitcher on this team has the cooties and no other team wants anything to do with them.

Is there a chance that the Mets break camp with a 25-man that has no lefty in the pen?

I don’t think so, but it may just be one (for now) and his name may be Rice.

I could see them going north with two of three (Gilmartin/Alvarez/Rice) with Edgin on the DL, then the right handers Black, Familia, Gee, Mejia and Torres. Then the lesser of the two lefties gets bounced when Parnell is ready. It gets real interesting, however, when Edgin is ready to return. Who goes then?

I think Reese's projection makes sense - my dark horse is Alvarez, based on his fine outings so far. Believe he is hardest throwing lefty pen guy they have.

Jack L has dug himself a mighty deep hole in this race.

I wonder what sort of top end velocity Gilmartin can produce in short pen outings? I know he is a soft-tossing starter, but so was Edgin in his early days, which is why he was drafted so low.

Leathersich has exposed himself to be a pitcher not ready for prime time.

I agree on Edgin starting the season on the DL, even if it is only imflamation. We're running out of time for rehab and building up arm strength.

Rice has the chops to go north and remain there throughout the season. Past that, it's a crap shoot.

Leathersich has not earned to opportunity to make the roster---an automatic DQ based on walk rate.

This needs to be a ready to win April---- if he can do 5-10 clean appearances (command), then he's a big league call up.
