Nieve, Josh, Pineiro, Cora... and Jose Cardenal

Fernando Nieve:

Caribes 2, Margarita 0 - Fernando Nieve pitched seven hitless innings before yielding a leadoff double in the eighth as the Caribes ended a two-game slide. The Mets right-hander ended up allowing two hits and striking out five over eight scoreless frames. Former Met Orlando Hernandez took the loss after giving up two runs on six hits with four strikeouts in five innings  -  mlb

Josh Thole

Despite what was reported by ESPN.com below, Mets C Josh Thole has left his Winter League team in Venezuela, according to this report.“It’s a shame but we made a mutual decision, because he wanted to rest in December,” team President Luis Avila said.“The good thing is that he wants to comeback next season.”… - fantasysp

Joel Pineiro

According to Tim Brown of Yahoo! Sports, the Yankees, Mets, Nationals, Cubs, Orioles and Angels have shown early interest in Joel Pineiro. Most of the teams above are bidding on John Lackey, however, and will wait to see where he goes before looking at secondary options. Pineiro, a 31-year-old Type B free agent, went 15-12 this past season with an impressive 3.49 ERA, 1.14 WHIP and MLB-leading 60.2 GB% in 32 starts. (Mets will not go after Joel Piniero, according to Peter Gammons of ESPN… )

Alex Cora:

Jose Cardenal

Cardenal's name crossed my mind during this exercise, but I consigned him to 1979 and out. D'oh! in that the main reason I remember Jose Cardenal was that we let him go in 1980 and finished next-to-last. The Royals picked him and he played in the World Series for them that very year. Like I said, D'oh! -

I was at the DH with the Phillies when, between games, Jose cardinal switched uniforms (to a grossly oversized Met one which with his huge 'fro made him really look like Bozo the Clown).

I connect this with an incident the 1st game: Mazilli suddenly just wandered out of the batter's box up the 1B line dragging his bat. Ump & catcher walked up the 3B side. A murmur in the crowd grew and I finally noticed on the Message board that Thurman Munson had died in a plane crash.
