Daily Mets Minors Report – 8-13-12

Date: 8-13-12

For the first time in 80 years, there are no veterans on either ticket

MLB –
Mike Zunino is hitting 377/.472/.726 in his first 28 professional games.
Sunday would have been Christy Mathewson’s 132nd birthday… played with Julio Franco

MLB - Mets:
Dave Gershman‏ -  Totally forgot Matt Lindstrom existed
Buster Olney‏ -  Johan Santana's numbers since the June 1 no-hitter: Starts: 9. Innings: 44. Hits: 61. Home Runs: 11. BB: 18. K: 39. ERA: 6.54.

AAA – Buffalo:
RHP Jenrry Mejia makes his sixth start of the season and third since returning to the rotation at the end of July. Mejia tossed 4.1 shutout innings on Monday in Syracuse. He allowed just three hits and struck out a pair in the no-decision. As a starter this year, Mejia is 0-1 with a 1.16ERA and only 15 hits allowed in 23.1 innings of work.
Sunday – Win, 9-3
LF Lucas Duda had a big day: 3-5, 3-R, 2-doubles, .275… I have a funny feeling we’ll see him back in Queens soon.
SS Josh Rodriguez hit his 6th home run. I’d like to see him stick around next year as an emergency insurance policy in case Ruben Tejada was to go down.
The best news of the night comes last. SP Jenrry Mejia shined: 5.0-IP, 70-42 (lower pitch count), 0-ER, 2-K, 1-BB, 2.90. Elvin Ramirez  (2.30) pitched 1.1 scoreless, but Robert Carson (2.08) gave up a homer.

AA-Binghamton:
RHP Cory Mazzoni (4-3, 3.60) makes his tenth start of the season and second against the Senators. Mazzoni has taken the no-decision in his last two starts. He allowed six runs (five earned) on nine hits over six innings in his last start against the New Britain Rock Cats on August 7. Mazzoni faced Harrisburg on August 2, allowing three runs (two earned) on ten hits over seven innings in a no-decision. Selected in the 2nd round of the 2011 draft out of North Carolina State, Mazzoni started his season with the St. Lucie Mets (High-A), going 5-1 with a 3.25 ERA in 12 starts in the Florida State League.
RHP Paul Demny (6-6, 5.29) makes his 22nd start of the season and first since July 25. Demny’s last two appearances came in relief, combining to throw 2.1 scoreless innings. Demny is searching for his first win since June 27. He started against the B-Mets on June 5, allowing four runs on six hits over six innings in a no-decision. Demny was selected in the 6th round of the 2008 draft by the Nationals out of Blinn College (JC) in Brenham, Texas. The righty has made at least 23 starts in each of his last three pro seasons, going 10-10 with a 4.32 ERA in 26 starts with the Potomac Nationals (High-A) last year.
Sunday – Win, 7-2
This was a great overall win for the team… 15 hits including three each from SS Sean Kazmar (.235), 2B Wilmer Flores (he sure is playing more 2B lately… .292), and C Juan Centeno (.280).
Third game in-a-row that Reese Havens hasn’t played.
Quality start by Cory Mazzoni: 5.0-IP, 6-H, 1-ER, 2-K, 3-BB, 3.45.

A+ - St. Lucie:
Game was cancelled…

A – Savannah:
No game scheduled…

A-Low – Brooklyn:
Sunday – Win, 10-5
Another dominating win by a Mets affiliate.
14-hit attack, led by three hits each from 3B Dimas Ponce (.207), DH Kevin Plawecki (.264), and 1B Alex Sanchez (.263). Ponce added a home run.
SP Rainy Lara went to 7-1 (5.0-IP, 7-H, 4-ER, 6-K, 1-BB, 3.02, and how would you like to backed up with the likes of Logan Taylor (0.00) and John Mincone (0.39)?

Rookie – Kingsport:
Sunday – Loss, 5-6 in 13 innings
Good try.
DH Gavin Cecchini starting to show some life: 3-7, 2-RBI, .260.
RP Akeel Morris pitched two scoreless innings (9.19).

Rookie – DSL Mets

No games scheduled

Mack, akeel Morris actually had 5 scoreless innings, with 9 k's, 2 hits & 2 walks. Hasn't really impressed this year, but this was a positive outing for him. Control has been his issue, which needs to be his focus in the offseason because his stuff is filthy if he could only figure out a way to harness it. Potential 8th inning setup man/closer in my opinion, or the next manny Alvarez. He, with Juan Urbana will take pretty big drop offs in the prospects rankings this year.
