Daily Mets Minors Report – 8-8-12

Date: 8-8-12

MLB –

Rangers To Release Yorvit Torrealba

MLB - Mets:

Jay Jaffe‏ -

Q - Would you sign Ollie Perez to a 1yr/$2M extension?

A - only after releasing the nuclear launch codes

AAA – Buffalo:

Ben Badler‏ - Billy Hamilton, Zack Wheeler, and Dylan Bundy all won multiple categories in the Baseball America Best Tools survey

RHP Jeurys Familia  makes his league-leading 24th start tonight. The righty has excelled on the road this season with a 6-3 record and a 3.76ERA in 11 starts. In those road starts, Familia has struck out 50 in 52.2 innings of work. Familia leads all active Bisons pitchers with seven wins and 93 strikeouts.

Mike Nickeas went 2-3 last night with a run scored, double and a walk. Nickeas has three multi-hit games in seven starts with the Herd since being optioned by the Mets. Overall, the catcher is hitting .455 (10-22) with four doubles, a home run, two RBI and three walks

Wednesday – Loss, 4-5 (12-innigs)

Lehigh Valley walked off in the 12th on a Fernando Hosana Banana wild pitch.

Buffalo did have 11 hits, led by three from RF Matt Tuiasosopo (.242).

C.J. Nitkowski (0.00), Elvin Ramirez (2.25) and Justin Hampson (2.30) combined for three scoreless innings.

Nothing worked around Jeurys Familia tonight. He gave up five hits in six innings (88-57) had two wild pitches, but only was accredited with one earned run and struck out seven. Still, this was far from a quality start and it’s starting to get a little old writing this about him for most of the summer.

AA-Binghamton:

LHP Darin Gorski (6-6, 4.09) makes his 20th start of the season and his first against the Rock Cats. The southpaw suffered the loss in his last start against the Reading Phillies on August 3. He allowed four runs on five hits, including three homers over six innings. The three home runs allowed matched a career-high. Gorski was selected by the Mets in the 7th round of the 2009 draft.

LHP Aaron Thompson (3-6, 5.43) takes the mound for the 13th time this season with the Rock Cats and second game against the B-Mets. The southpaw has gone winless in his last six games, a stretch including four losses. He took a no-decision in his last start against the Altoona Curve on August 3, allowing one run on five hits over six innings. Thompson is pitching for his fourth organization in the last four years. He spent 2011 in the Pirates’ system, eventually making his Major League debut on August 24, 2011. The New Mexico native was selected by the Marlins in the first round of the 2005 draft out of Second Baptist School (Houston, TX). He was traded to the Washington Nationals in July 2009 and claimed off waivers by the Pirates in December 2010.

Wednesday – Win, 8-3

QS for Dan Gorski – 6.0-IP, 93-56, 2-ER, 4-H, 2-K, 1-BB, 4.03…

Tonight was 3B Jefry Marte’s night: 2-4, 1-R, 9th HR, 3-RBI

A+ - St. Lucie:

Wednesday – Loss, 2-4

3B Aderlin Rodriguez continues to swing a major league bat, belting his 6th A+ homer of the season and 22nd overall. The problem continues his low BA (.240 A+ and .266 combined) and shoddy defense at third (19 errors in Savannah and six more in St. Lucie). He simply can’t play third base at a level that would earn him a major league job, so the question continues to be when will the Mets try a conversion to either a corner outfield position or first base. As one scout told me “we all know he sucks at third and no one is going to trade for this kid unless he shows us something in the field…” That being said, he and Cory Vaughn (BTW, where is Cory?) represent the big bats in the system.

A – Savannah:

Wednesday – Win, 9-1

This was a fun one.

13-hit attack, including three each from CF Gilbert Gomez (.265) and RF Greg Pron (.244).

Alex Pantileodis continued his newly found confidence and has now 34 in his last 25 innings… we have a separate feature on Carlos Vazquez later today who once again dazzled (3.09).

A-Low – Brooklyn:

Luis Mateo, John Mincone, Hansel Robles and Gabriel Ynoa selected as New York-Penn League All-Stars

John Mincone - Thank you to all my family, friends, and all the fans for the incredible support you continue to show me this season. It is an honor and I feel truly blessed to be representing the Mets organization and the Brooklyn Cyclones in this years NYPL All-Star game. I couldn't do it without you all. (tonight… 1.0IP, 0-R, 0.40).

CF Brandon Nimmo remained day-to-day with a sore shoulder.

(I’m afraid to say anything about Phillip Evans)

SP Luis Mateo continues to prove he shouldn’t be pitching anywhere near this level: 6.0-IP, 9-K, 0-BB, 2-ER.

Rookie – Kingsport:

Wednesday – Loss 2-3

Another excellent QS for John Gant: 5.2-IP, 6-K, 0-BB, 1-ER. That’s three QSs in-a-row and I was particularly impressed with the lack of walks. This is a whole different pitcher that pitched in June (6.97).

Rookie – DSL Mets

Mets minor league RHP Nicolas Debora suspended for 50 games without pay after testing positive for metabolites of Stanozolol
