Nationals general manager Mike Rizzo said on on 106.7 The Fan in Washington,
D.C. on Wednesday that prospect right-hander Lucas Giolito (elbow) will likely
need Tommy John surgery.
Giolito, who was selected 16th overall in June's First-Year
Player Draft, left his first pro start last week due to right elbow soreness and
is scheduled to see Dr. Lewis Yocum for a second opinion. "It looks like he is
going to need Tommy John surgery," said Rizzo. "He has seen our medical people.
We're going to give him a second medical opinion." The Nats were aware of the
risk when they picked Giolito and he doesn't turn 19 until next July, so it's
hardly a doomsday scenario for the franchise or his future
