Daily Mets Minors Report – 8-15-12

Date: 8-15-12

Now I know why that little boy was in the opening scene of ‘Breaking Bad’.
Horshack’ died... damn…
MLB –
Kevin Goldstein‏ -  Had one of those super-fun scout talks in the late innings where we figured out how many No. 1 pitchers there are (in baseball). Ended up at SEVEN
Q - Can you sum up the Rule 5 draft in six words or less?
A -  Something that gets too much attention.

MLB - Mets:
SP Mike Pelfrey will throw catch next week.
The Mets have traded “a player to be named later” to the Boston Red Sox for catcher. Kelly Shoppach.
David Wright - “You want to be able to win, and I’ve only experienced a little bit of that here.”
Dale Thayer notched his sixth save of the season tonight and first since Huston Street hit the disabled list on Saturday with a strained quad. Thayer faced the minimum and needed just 10 pitches to seal the deal. The right-hander is now 6-for-8 in save chances this season while posting a 3.51 ERA and a 3.33 K/BB. http://www.fangraphs.com/fantasy/index.php/bullpen-report-august-13-2012/

AAA – Buffalo:
LHP Garrett Olson has cleared waivers, and is headed back to Triple-A Buffalo
Stephen Plezia to David J. Rubin -  The Bison game is on SNY tonight so I'm watching Lucas Duda and he hasn't done anything tonight yet, but he came into this one hitting .275 with 2 HR's and 6 RBI in 13 games . Those numbers project to about 24 HR's and 75 RBI over 162 games.....he is playing left field
David J. Rubin - Duda will be up shortly, and platoon with Bay until Bay is gone. He's got a future with us, for sure. Here's hoping it starts sooner rather than later. He had to work on some things with his fielding in the minors- when he gets stressed in the field, his hitting suffers. He's got some work to do, but the talent is definitely there!!
RHP Jeurys Famila makes his IL-leading 25th start of the season tonight. The righty is coming off a no-decision in Lehigh Valley, August 8, where he tossed 6.0 innings while allowing four runs (one earned) and striking out seven. Familia leads all current Bisons pitchers in strikeouts (100) and innings pitched (112.0). He is also tied with RHPCHRIS SCHWINDEN for the team lead in wins with seven.
Here we go again with Familia. Just when you think they should shut him down, along comes a gem like tonight: 7.0-IP, 0-R, 4-H, 8-K, 1-BB. I’m speechless.
Even Matt den Dekker (.210) got into the act, hitting a grand slam in the 7th.

AA-Binghamton:.
RHP Edgar Ramirez activated from the disabled list
RHP Gonzalez Germen (6-9, 4.80) makes his 15th start of the season and second against the Fisher Cats. Germen is in the midst of a personal three-game losing streak, tied for the longest this season. He suffered the loss in his last start to the New Britain Rock Cats in the second game of a doubleheader on August 7. He was tagged for six runs on six hits and three walks over five innings. Germen earned his first Double-A win against New Hampshire on May 11, surrendering three runs and scattering eight hits over seven innings.
RHP Brandon Morrow (1-0, 3.60) makes his second rehab appearance with the Fisher Cats. Morrow went 7-4 with a 3.01 ERA in thirteen starts with the Toronto Blue Jays (AL) before landing on the disabled list with an oblique injury in mid-June. Morrow defeated the Erie SeaWolves in his first rehab start with New Hampshire on August 8. He allowed two runs on three hits over five innings. Originally selected by the Seattle Mariners as the 5th overall pick in the 2006 draft, Morrow was traded to the Blue Jays in December 2009 in exchange for Johermyn Chavez and Brandon League.
Tuesday – Loss, 2-5
SP Chase Huchington did, well, ok: 6.0-IP, 2-ER, 7-H, 1-K, 0-BB.
Reese Havens was out again.

A+ - St. Lucie:
LHP Adam Kolarek transferred from Binghamton (AA) to St. Lucie (High-A)
SP Tyler Pill was placed on the DL.
The Florida State League announced today St. Lucie Mets pitcher Rafael Montero has been named the Pitcher of the Week between the period of August 6-13. Montero tossed 7 2/3 no-hit innings against the Palm Beach Cardinals on August 7 to win his fifth game. He struck out five and walked three. Montero retired 15 consecutive batters at one point. The 21-year-old right-hander won his third consecutive game and has struck out 56 over 50 2/3 innings with the Mets through eight starts. Montero struck out a career-high 14 batters in a victory over the Clearwater Threshers on July 31. Montero, a 6-0, 170-pound righty, hails out of the Dominican Republic and was signed by the Mets as a non-drafted free agent in January of 2011. Montero is a combined 11-5 with a 2.36 ERA between low-A Savannah and St. Lucie. He has pitched 122 innings and has struck out 110 while walking just 19. Montero is the first Mets pitcher to win the Florida State League Pitcher of the Week Award during the 2012 season. First baseman Richard Lucas was named Florida State League Player of the Week between July 30- August
While I considered Michael Fulmer to be the better overall prospect, and Domingo Tapia may have the better upside of the pitchers donning a Sand Gnats uniform this year, Rafael Montero is the surer thing.  The kid has 3 pitches that rank in the 50’s on a 20-80 scale.  Having seen his better secondary pitches the second time around, I project him to be a middle of the rotation starter, likely debuting sometime during the 2014 season if all things continue to go as swimmingly as they did this season. http://bullpenbanter.com/mets-prospect-rafael-montero-scouting-report/
Tuesday – Win, 9-8
RP Jack Leathersich had five more strikeouts tonight and he’s now up to 106-K in 66.1-IP. Is there any question here?
RF Cory Vaughn hit his 19thhome run.
SP Alex Panteliodis was due for an off-night: 5.2-IP, 10-H, 7-R, 5-K, 0-BB.

A – Savannah:
Tuesday – Loss, 1-10
SS Danny Muno – 4-4, 2-R, 3B, HR, 2-RBI, .286

A-Low – Brooklyn:
John Mincone – “I can’t believe how fast a year has come and gone. I still hear your voice telling me to "fire my hips" every time I'm on the mound, and praying with me every time I'm struggling. Everything you've taught me, I carry with me every day Dad. I'll always remember, Plan B is always better than Plan A, even though it may not seem like it at first. I love you dad♥”
Tuesday – the All-Star game was played tonight

Rookie – Kingsport:
Tueday – Game 1 – win, 4-3
DH Gavin Cecchini (why is he always DHing? Is Andy Chavez the prospect?) – 1-3, .262
C Tomas Nido – 1-2, BB, .272
