2014.
MLB - Mets:
Recalled LHP Robert Carson from Buffalo
AAA – Buffalo:.
RHP Zack Wheeler takes the mound for his fourth start at
Triple-A this season. The righty is coming off his first decision with the
Herd, a loss, August 16 against Lehigh Valley. He tossed 5.0 innings while
allowing five runs but did not walk a batter. Overall, Wheeler is 0-1 with a
4.60ERA and 16 strikeouts in 15.2 innings of work with the Bisons… BISONS BITS:
INF MATT TUIASOSOPO hit his first home run since
July 13, a two-run shot off Ramon Ortiz in the second inning last night. It was
his ninth homer of the season...RHP C.J. NITKOWSKI’s streak
of not allowing an earned run ended after he gave up two last night. His ERA is
now 2.84 in 6.1 innings of work and eight appearances with the Herd...OF FRED LEWIS stole his 23rd base of the season last
night and is now tied for fourth-most in the International League...The New
York Mets announced today that they recalled LHP ROBERT
CARSON. The southpaw had a 1.72ERA and 15 strikeouts in 10 games with
the Herd (15.2IP). – from team PR
The Yankees rallied for
three runs in the sixth inning of a 4-2 victory over the Bisons on a sunny
Tuesday afternoon at Coca-Cola Field. The loss was the Herd's third straight.
Corban Joseph, Eduardo
Nunez and Kosuke Fukudome all singled home runs in the sixth for a
Scranton/Wilkes-Barre club that has now won six straight and nine of their 11
games. The Yankees lead the Pawtucket Red Sox by 5.5 games for first place in
the IL North.
For the second
consecutive game, the Bisons raced out to an early 2-0 advantage in the second
inning. Matt Tuiasosopo singled home Zach Lutz and Oswaldo Navarro drove a deep
fly ball to centerfield for a sacrifice fly.
Brandon Laird cut the
lead in half for Scranton/Wilkes-Barre with his fourth-inning sacrifice fly.
But other than that, Bisons starter Zack Wheeler cruised through his first five
innings of work.
Wheeler walked just one
batter over the first three frames and didn't allow a hit until Nunez's blooper
over first base in the fourth inning. Wheeler retired the side again in order
in the fifth inning before running into trouble.
Chris Dickerson led off
the sixth inning with a double and Joseph's RBI grounder to right tied the
score. Joseph moved to second base on Fred Lewis' throw home, putting him in
position to score on Nunez's hit. Scranton/Wilkes-Barre's insurance run came
two batters later as Fukudome served a Wheeler offering to the opposite field
to cash Nunez.
Wheeler suffered the
defeat for Buffalo. Only three of the four runs he allowed in his 5.1 innings
of work were earned – from team PR
AA-Binghamton:
RHP Greg Peavey (6-8, 5.41) makes his 23rd start of the
season and fifth against the Fisher Cats. The righty went a career-long eight
innings against New Hampshire in his previous start on August 16, a losing
effort. Peavey allowed five runs on nine hits and surrendered two homers in his
second complete game of the season. In four starts against the Fisher Cats
Peavey has gone 0-3 with a 9.67 ERA. In 22-1/3 innings, he has struck out 12
and allowed a .357 batting average. Peavey has thrown at least six innings in
each of his last six starts…
RHP Deck McGuire (5-14, 6.26) takes the mound for his 26th
start of the season and sixth versus the B-Mets. The righty has lost three
straight games, most recently falling to Binghamton on August 15. He threw
three shutout innings before allowing four runs on four hits in the decisive
fourth frame. In five starts against the B-Mets, McGuire has gone 1-4 with a
9.31 ERA. Binghamton has hit .286 against the Richmond, Virginia native.
McGuire was selected by the Toronto Blue Jays in the 1st round as the 11th
overall pick in the 2010 draft out of Georgia Tech. – from team PR
Greg Peavey fired seven
shutout innings and the Binghamton Mets scored the game’s only run on a
fielding error in a 1-0 victory over the New Hampshire Fisher Cats Tuesday
night at NYSEG Stadium. Peavey struck out a season-high six in Binghamton’s
eighth shutout win of the season.
It was a contest loaded
with missed opportunities as the teams combined to strand21 men on base and go
0-for-13 with runners in scoring position. Binghamton threatened early against
Fisher Cats starter Deck McGuire, but stranded seven runners through the first
four innings.
New Hampshire pressed
to break the scoreless game in the fifth. After a one-out double by Jake
Marisnick put runners at second and third, Peavey induced Ryan Goins to ground
out and intentionally walked Ryan Schimpf to load the bases. The gamble paid
off as Brad Glenn struck out to end the inning.
Binghamton finally
broke through in the bottom of the fifth. Dustin Martin led off with single and
tried to score on Wilmer Flores’ double to center, but was gunned down at the
plate. Following a groundout that pushed Flores to third, Eric Campbell stroked
a ground ball to third. The sharp roller bounced through the legs of Ryan
Schimpf, allowing Flores to score.
Peavey made the one-run
lead stand over his final two innings. The righty fired a perfect sixth and
stranded two runners in the seventh. Over his seven shutout innings, Peavey
allowed six hits and left nine men aboard.
Jeff Kaplan took over
in the eighth and worked around a two-out single to post a scoreless inning.
Drew Carpenter got the call in the ninth and left the tying run at second to
earn his second save as a B-Met.
Peavey (7-8) fired a
career-high seven shutout innings to earn his third win in August, the most
wins he has had in any month as a B-Met. McGuire (5-15) took the hard-luck loss
allowing an unearned run in five innings of work. Joel Carreno closed the tab
with three scoreless innings of relief. – from team PR

A – Savannah:
The Asheville Tourists blanked the Savannah Sand Gnats 6-0
Tuesday night at Historic Grayson Stadium. After dropping the first two games
of the three-game series to Asheville, the Gnats have now lost five games in a
row.
The Tourists (34-24/81-47) took a 1-0 lead in the second
inning when RF David Kandilas fisted a single over Brian Harrison at third base
to drive home DH Will Swanner who had doubled to begin the inning.
Asheville added three runs in the seventh to establish a 4-0
advantage. Swanner began the inning by ripping the first pitch he saw from
Gnats’ starter Marcos Camarena over the leftfield wall for a solo homer and a
2-0 lead.
The Tourists outhit the Gnats (24-33/65-59) 11-2. Both
Savannah hits were singles, and the team did not put a runner at third base all
game. Asheville, by contrast, picked up six extra-base hits.
Asheville starter Ben Alsup was perfect into the fourth
inning and took a no-hitter into the fifth, when Gregory Pron singled into
right for the Gnats’ first hit.
The Tourists tacked on two runs in the ninth against reliever
TJ Chism to complete the game’s scoring. From team PR
A-Low – Brooklyn:
Nelfi Zapata put the
Cyclones on the board in the third, blasting a two-run home run over the left
field wall, but the ValleyCats rallied in the fifth and Tri-City went on to
defeat Brooklyn 5-2.
Brooklyn starting
pitcher Rainy Lara loaded the bases in the fifth with two walks and a hit
batsman. He then got Austin Elkins to strike out before surrendering a two-run
single by Preston Tucker, which tied the game and knocked him from the mound.
Tim Peterson then came in from the bullpen and allowed a single to Jesse
Wierzbicki to give Tri-City the lead. Up next, Tyler Heineman hit a sacrifice
fly to make it 4-2.
Lara was tagged for
four earned runs over 4.1 innings of work. He struck out three and walked two
in just his second loss of the year.
The Cyclones were in
trouble again in the top of the sixth. Reliever Craig Hanson walked Ryan Dineen
and hit Dan Gulbransen with a pitch before Joe Sclafani reached on an error by
shortstop Phillip Evans. That error allowed Dineen to cross the plate and give
the ValleyCats a three-run advantage.
Tri-City starting
pitcher Juri Perez earned his second win after throwing 6.0 innings. He allowed
the two earned runs off six hits with a walk and five strikeouts. Jeremiah
Meiners tossed the final 3.0 frames, earning his second save.
For the Cyclones, Matt
Koch threw 3.0 scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits, walking
none, and striking out three.
Brooklyn was just
1-for-2 with runners in scoring position – Juan Gamboa, who was plated by
Zapata, had led off the third frame with a line drive double. The team left
five men on base. – from team PR
