Daily Mets Minors Report – 8-4-12

Date: 8-4-12

                      MLB –

CBS sees big upside in sports. Not a lot of new costs and plenty of revenue potential is how CBS CEO Les Moonves sees the planned launch of the CBS Sports Radio network next January. It’s also another good reason for the media conglomerate to commit itself to radio.

Carlos Lee turned down sale to Yankees before deadline

Athletics trade catcher Kurt Suzuki to the Washington Nationals for catcher David Freitas

MLB - Mets:

Cleveland recalled OF Ezequiel Carrera

Johan Santana will have a rehab appearance Sunday or Monday in minors. Won't pitch in Marlins series.

The Pirates released Craig Hansen at the end of spring training ’11 after a pair of injury-wracked seasons in which he made just 17 total appearances. The St. John's product came down with Parsonage-Turner which cost him velocity and strength. The Mets point out in a press release that they signed Hansen through the ’13 season, so don't necessarily expect to see him in action this season. – Matt Eddy

Keith Law –

            Q - Can Matt Harvey be a top-of-the-rotation starter?

A - It's possible.

Q - Harvey appears to have the raw stuff to be a top end starter, and everyone raves about his makeup. Why the hesitation?

A - The raw stuff you saw in his big league debut is better than the raw stuff he had in the minors earlier this year.

Q - What happened to Ike Davis' swing? He looks flat footed some times, jumpy others. Still a chance he turns out to be an above average 1B?

A - Got his hands way back and down, creating unneeded length there.

Q - Is Zack Wheeler the best prospect traded at the last two deadlines?

A - Yes.

AAA – Buffalo:

RHP Jeurys Familia takes the hill tonight for his league-leading 23rd start of the season. In three previous starts against the Chiefs this season, the righty is 2-0 with a 2.20ERA. Familia has also struck out 16 Syracuse batters in 16.1 innings this year. Familia is 9-3 in August in his minor league career so far, posting a 3.15ERA and strikeouts 20 starts (105.2IP).

SP Dylan Owen placed on the DL (left ankle sprain)

No. 11 ZACK WHEELER, RHP METS  Team: Double-A Binghamton (Eastern) Age: 22  Why He's Here: 1-0, 2.70, 6 2/3 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 HR, 11 SO, 4 BB -  The Scoop: Liberal with walks though he was in his final Double-A outing, Wheeler also struck out a season-high 11 batters in 6 2/3 innings against Harrisburg. (Naturally, he also set a season high with 106 pitches.) Forget the strikeouts and the walks for a second and think about this: Wheeler allowed just two home runs in 19 Double-A starts, at one point going 11 starts (and at least 80 innings) without anyone taking him deep.  Wheeler won't have the Eastern League to kick around anymore, not after the Mets promoted him to Triple-A Buffalo, where he assumes Matt Harvey's vacated rotation spot. He leaves the EL as the leader with 117 strikeouts and (spoiler alert) he fared well in our forthcoming Eastern League Best Tools survey. – BA

Friday –

You have to just shake your head sometimes about Jeury Familia. He lasted only 2.2 innings Friday, giving up 5-ER, 5-H, 2-HR. They took him out after only 51 pitches, only 25 of which were strikes. I really wish they would just shut him down for the season.

AA-Binghamton:

LHP Darin Gorski (6-5, 3.98) makes his 19th start of the season and his first against the Reading Phillies. Gorski snapped a five-game winless streak with a victory in his last start against the Portland Sea Dogs on July 27. He allowed one run on three hits and struck out six over six innings. The southpaw went 1-1 with a 3.54 ERA in five starts in July. After averaging one walk in every 7.8 innings in June, Gorski handed out a walk every 2.3 innings in July.

RHP Ethan Martin (8-6, 3.58) makes his first start as member of the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Martin was traded from the Los Angeles Dodgers to the Phillies with Josh Lindblom for Shane Victorino on July 31. The righty was a member of the Chattanooga Lookouts (LAD: AA) starting rotation before the trade. He won his final start against the Birmingham Barons on July 28, allowing five runs on five hits over five innings. In 118.0 innings with Chattanooga he held opponents to a .214 batting average, including a .171 clip to righties. However, he handed out 61 walks, issuing four free passes or more eight times. The 23-year-old was the 15th overall pick in the 2008 draft by the Dodgers out of Stephens County School (GA).

Friday – Loss, 1-4

2B Wilmer Flores had just hit .152 in the 10 games coming into Friday, but started out hitting his 4th AA (14th total for year) HR:: 2-4, 1-R, .280…another 4-ERs in six inning for Darin Gorski… he’s lucky there isn’t any other lefty in the pipeline to pitch in the Buffalo rotation next season.

A+ - St. Lucie:

No. 3  RAFAEL MONTERO, RHP  METS  Team: high Class A St. Lucie (Florida State) Age: 21 Why He's Here: 1-0, 3.00, 6 IP, 5 H, 2 R, 0 BB, 14 SO - The Scoop: Montero made his pro debut last May after signing out of the Dominican Republic as an inexperienced and older prospect during the offseason. Since then, he's raced through four levels by pounding the strike zone with a 92-94 mph fastball and has impressed with his advanced feel for the pitch. On Tuesday night against Clearwater, Montero struck out 14 of the 23 batters he faced. Standing at just 6-feet, 170 pounds, he also flashes a quality slider at times and is still refining his changeup. In his last three starts, the righthander has struck out 28 while not issuing a walk in 18 innings. He's held Florida State League righthanders to a .139 average – BA

Ben Badler –

Q – In what order would you rank Rafael Montero, Luis Mateo, and Domingo Tapia?

A - Tapia, Montero, Mateo. The first two have the best chance to start, but that's three big league arms.

Q - Just another 21/almost 22 year old 6' rhp or is Rafael Montero something much more? Can you expand on him a bit?

A - His feel for pitching is WAY beyond his experience level. There's no out pitch in his arsenal to hang your hat on, but he's commanding a plus fastball and showing a very encouraging uptick in his strikeout rate since the move to High-A. Saw him as maybe a 5th starter things clicked coming into the year, but now there are scouts putting mid-rotation potential on him.

Friday – Win, 6-0

We talk about so many pitchers in this organization and hoe exciting they are, but Tyler Pill just keeps plugging along, one quality start after another. 7.2-IP, 3-H, 0-R, 10-K, 1-BB, an outstanding 1.82.

3B Aderlin Rodriguez hit two home runs, running his A+ total to 4, and his season to 18-HR, 71-RBI. This ties RF Cory Vaughn for organizational leader, who also hit his 18th home run of the season.

A – Savannah:

Friday – Loss, 2-3

Jeez, you just can’t get away from prospect pitching in this organization. Tonight, it was Domingo Tapia’s turn, but it wasn’t his best: 7.1-IP, 5-K, 0-BB, 2-ER

A-Low – Brooklyn:

Dave Gershman‏ -  Spoke to a scout today who saw Luis Mateo last night. He agreed that Mateo has changed his delivery over the course of a month. (Still says future is in pen)

Friday – Win, 3-0

Continuing… SP Luis Cessa:  5.0-IP, 0-R, 2-H, 4-K, 0-BB, 2.43

Nice, quick game… two-hitter by three Mets pitchers… SS Phillip Evans: 3-4, 1-R, double, RBI, .244… CF Brandon Nimmo: 2-3, 1-R, double, walk, .265

Rookie – Kingsport:

Friday – zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz
