Mack Ade – The 2013 Mets Keepers

Before we get going… RP Josh Edgin, SP Matt Harvey, and OF Jordany Valdespin have graduated from this list. I also have Jeurys Familia and Jenrry Mejia joining the Mets pen come April 1st. They are now full time members of the New York Mets 25-man squad.

In addition, we don’t list either Kirk Nieuwenhuis or Lucas Duda, who past the minimal amount of MLB at bats to lose their prospect status.

I removed OF Bradley Marquez from any roster because I project him becoming a full time football player.

Lastly, due to age, we’ve taken guys like Josh Satin, Pedro Beato, Alan Dykstra, Zach Lutz, Collin McHugh, and Chris Schwinden of the list. They no longer qualify as prospect material.

The prospect list suffers from their loss; however, it is the team’s gain.

Hard to believe Juan Urbina is completely gone from this list..Just a couple years ago he was top ten. I saw him pitch in one of the cyclones games on SNY and he was throwing mid-eightys. Same velocity he had when he was sixteen.

Kevin Anderson said...

It's pretty clear that the strength of the Mets' minor league system is their pitching with only 41% of your top 61 being position players. Would it be fair to say that the Mets should be looking to acquire higher ceiling position players the next couple of years (draft, trades, IFA)? I wonder how many of the high school right handers the Mets drafted the last two years will make these lists in two years?

Mack Ade said...

Craig: I didn't know what to do with Urbina. I can't remember the last time he pitched well.

It seems to me he has lived on his father's name for the past two seasons.

There's unough room at the bottom of the system to give him one more shot at, let say, Brooklyn, or repeat K-Port (can you imagine repeating K-Port) but he's no longer prospect material

David Rubin said...

Flashback merely 2 years- the system is over-crowded with middle infielders and outfielders, and no one had a real handle on the true quality level of either area. Omar had a few "notable" signings that had yet to pan out, internationally, (Pena, F-Mart, etc) but positionally, it looked like there HAD to be some gold to be mined there. Pitching-wise, well, let's just say that no one would've confused Omar's work with that of, say, the Baltimore Orioles of the 70's.

And THAT is why, no matter HOW MUCH you project or guess, that is what it will always be- simply a GUESS to how well these young players will be able to harness either the talent they already have, or develop the talent that wasn't readily evident but that some scout saw a hint of and left it to the minor league development department to harness.

Now "flash-forward" to 2012 - in fact, to TODAY, August 5th, 2012 - and what do we see? Well, an organization that, first of all, is less reliant on being top-heavy in international picks and dry at the middle levels. Most of those so-called picks have either been traded (F-Mart), or forgotten (Pena, Urbina) due to lack of development (high upside that has become slim chance).

From the "list" of former prospects currently with the Mets (or at least, WILL be back with them) comes Duda, Valdespin, Kirk (bad injury-UGH!!), as well as Tejada, Davis & Thole, actually a relatively impressive list. And I know that you've taken Josh Satin, Alan Dykstra & Zach Lutz off the list from a prospect standpoint, but I can see Satin playing a super-utility role next year and Lutz as a third baseman for SOMEONE- but that's fine, take those names off the list.

Furthermore, you've taken Beato, Schwinden and McHugh off the list- I agree with the first 2, but still list McHugh as a "prospect" b/c he hasn't spent time in the bigs and I think that he will, at some point, as another Dillon Gee-type, either with us or another team.

With all of those names off the list, AND with F-mart gone and Pena and Urbina non-factors, we STILL see an amazing amount of top quality arms in the system, seemingly overnight. Just staying with your "top 50" for a moment, 28 pitchers reside in that list. Many of them are "left-overs" from Minaya's regime, while a number, especially Zack Wheeler, came from Sandy & Company. Still, overall, Omar's drafts are starting to come to fruition, with picks ripening left and right. :::END PART ONE:::

Kevin:

I think the Mets will always draft the highest name on their list regardless of position.

NOW, getting on that list is a different thing. You may see the list swing positionally, but not the "draft the best available: theory.

Drafting high schooler instead of college juniors is like evaluating an 8th grade team vs. high school... the talent and the competition is suspect.

Give these pitchers (Tapia, Vasquez, Mateo, Pill, etc) one more trade period and this time next year the Mets will be able to pick the position they want to fill.

Charles said...

Alex pants has pitched fairly shitty until just recently. Him jumping to bingo would be a death sentence. I'd rather see DeGrom make that leap. Also, I would love to see Alderson take a college power hitting outfielder in the first round next year. Very pitching heavy minor league system and these kids they're taking early are so far off from helping the mothership any time soon. They're Gunna have a great rotation come 2014 but unless the Wilpons pony up some cash, the outfield is going to be dreadful without some free agent signings. The pitching is going to keep them in games, but David isn't going to be able to drive in three runs a game, every game all season. They are going to need legit run producers in the corner outfield spots or else it's all moot. Not to mention a better catcher who drives in more then 15 runs by August. Anyway, come 2014...they're set at pitching, third, first, SS, second, and center. If they complete the puzzle, which won't come from the minors, they might actually Win 95 games. .....nice post Mack

:::PART TWO:::
Now, looking at the position players, they tend to fall in either one category or another;

on one hand- position players who are one-dimensional, seemingly playing out of position because they really HAVE no position (Flores)

or

on the other hand- position players who have a position, but have a LONG way to go before reaching the majors (Cecchini, Nimmo, etc.)

The "good news" is that, at least under Sandy & Company, the players who need more seasoning (either a lot or a little) seem to be getting it, as no one is being rushed to play above their levels, while some are getting the push they need to excel at the next stage.

Of all of the arms on the list (and again, taking Harvey, Edgin, Familia & Mejia out of this mix), the arms that excite me the most are Fulmer, Tapia, deGrom and Leathersich, with Tapia & Leathersich bound for the Mets bullpen sometime b/t 2015 and 2016, if not sooner. However, there are another 6-8 arms that I would classify as "beyond interesting" - meaning, as having a better-than-good-chance of becoming future major league hurlers, and it's been a LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONG time since we could say THAT about this org.

Finally, with merely a handful of what I'd call "gimme" major league position players poised to come out anytime soon, one has to guess that Sandy will, at some point, probably not THIS offseason but possibly/probably next, be making deals where pitchers will be traded for position players, and he can be selective as to who he brings back because teams ALWAYS want quality arms and there's never enough of them, especially in this "new world" of baseball we live in (2012, meet 1967!!)

One has to surmise, after reading through this list and studying the names, that indeed, Sandy will be focusing on position players for, most likely, the next two drafts, and that, combined with potential trades, will probably leave this system looking a LOT different then it does right now. And, quite frankly, right now, this list is FAR more impressive then ANY ONE of us thought it would be...so great job, Mack, and I can't wait to see where the "pundits" (Law, Mayo, etc) rank our system this offseason!!

Hey Mack, this is Mike Freire (having minor issues using my login today)........AWESOME post!

I agree with everyone here, in that we (Mets) have an abundance of pitching prospects at all of the different levels in our minor league system. Since pitching will always be the key to contending ball clubs, it is a nice "problem" to have.

Plus, it gives Sandy ammunition to address weaknesses on the roster as we go forward. Plus, it will allow for sustainability as 2014 comes and goes (instead of our usual pattern of win for a few years and then become an also ran for a decade).

The biggest thought going through my head while reading your list, was where would we be without David Wright? He is obviously talented and our best player. He is also dangerously close to the end of his current contract.

Our future offense would be really bad if we needed to replace his production, on top of the other holes that currently exist. Fiscal sanity is nice, but eventually you need to spend some of the money you have saved. Wise spending is key and keeping David long term qualifies as wise, in my book.

I think we have legitimate holes at C, 2B, LF, RF and possibly CF (depending on how Kirk and/or DD progress), without any real answers on the current roster, or in the upper levels of our minor league system.

The future looks promising, but Sandy has a lot of work to do!

Mack Ade said...

okay... now we got the ball rolling here...

next...

notice the names of the players on the bottom of the original posts vs. the "keepers" I have placed on the 2013 teams...

then notice the openings on each roster (in purple)

there are plenty of fill-in areas for AAAA players, some of which are already in the organization...

what do we do with players like them?

Josh Satin?

Zach Lutz?

etc.

Mack Ade said...

David:

You have picked up EXACTLY what I wanted to creare here.. a general discussion in the Mack's Mets "War Room"

Your McHugh comments are true on and noted... so lets go back and get him on the list

Justin M. said...

Great read Mack! Couple of Q's

Why have seven SPs going to Lucy? Who's the odd man(s) out?

Familia has pitched like crap this year as a SP. I know the tools are there, but I wouldn't touch him as a ML RP till he proves something in AAA. How can you project him to be on the ML squad out of spring training?

What's the reasoning behind bumping Nimmo up two levels? He's still a baby. The only other players making two level jumps are due to them being too old for lower levels. Kinda surprising since you don't come off as a huge Nimmo fan.

Havens has to be a quickly sinking #7?

Mack Ade said...

Charles:

Panteliodes is a real stretch, but I don't know where else to put him.

Annybody have a suggestion?

BTW, 100% of his recent success is due to confidence, not talent

Mack Ade said...

Justin:

Morning:

Re: 7 pitchers.... see? that's the problem... there are too many of them and someone has to go, but there is no place to send them. There actually is 8 but I already jumped Panst to B-Mets too early.

THIS is the trade bait

This is a war room... who would you take out and where would you send them?

or, who would you put in the pen and why?

Mack Ade said...

Justin - okay... I've give you Familia back to AAA for pen work... going to go add him to the list...

Mack Ade said...

Nimmo:

All scouts out of Brookly say he is showing the same character as that kid in Washington.

Some kids, like Trout and Harper, never let their lack of age get in the way of their talent.

Any other opinions on where to put Nimmo? (Savannah is 105 degrees heat index every day for 3 months)

Justin M. said...

I'm cool with Nimmo at Lucy. We've got no better options at OF anywhere else in the system. I actually went to my first Cyclones game yesterday and he did nothing but impress lacing two doubles.

I really see no other ML regular OFs anywhere in the system. Den Dekker in particular has been a great disappointment for me this year. I saw him play a bunch of games in spring training and he looked outstanding defensively in CF. I was hoping his bat would hold up enough, but his stats are downright embarrassing so far at AAA.

Mack Ade said...

I am going to take Charles' thoughts as a good plan and I'm realigning Alex Pants back to St. Lucy; however, I thing that makes 8 starters there.

Anybody got some thoughts what to do here?

Brian Joura said...

Reese Havens needs to be removed as a prospect. Collin McHugh will make a bigger MLB impact than Havens.

Craig Brown said...

So with Havens, Flores, Marte, Dykstra, and Campbell all at AAA..who plays where, and how often? For that matter what happens to Satin and Lutz?

David Rubin said...

I totally agree with Brian. Havens has no place right now, in my mind, anyway, until/unless he has an amazing run offensively and quickly. He's a major candidate in need of new surroundings...

David Rubin said...

Also, remove Duda from AAA "Rochester" (dating myself by hearing Jack Benny say "Rochester" in my head) and move him to the bigs. He's def ticketed for big leagues with September call-up and won't be back down, IMO, next year. Most likely, he'll spell Ike 20 games and platoon in left with Bay, as long as Bay remains, moving Hairston and Baxter to platoon in right and, depending upon the day, center (for Baxter).

Mack Ade said...

Re: Reese Havens

Okay... I'm going to move Havens down off the prospect portion of the list and below McHugh

David Rubin said...

Also, I'm guessing Satin, Lutz, Pena, Nickeas & Peavey as potential Rule V losses. If Lutz is removed from the 40 man, he will be traded before Rule V, IMO. Someone will try to take Pena and see what he has in Spring Training, defensively, to see if it's worth giving him time with big league coaches to see if his "pedigree" might finally come out- catching being still so rare to find. Peavey and Lutz could both be packaged with another "almost" like Dykstra to a team desperate for both AAA-A fillers and who has room on their 40-man in exchange for perhaps a low-level prospect with tools and no success yet. Just a guess...

Mack Ade said...

Craig: the AAA infield is a mess but it must represent the future, not the past.

There is a more than good chance that Campbell could make Queens out of camp as a utility player, but he can plan 1B, 3B, RF, and LF at AAA - he's a keeper

You have to decide who is the emergency Mets first baseman in case Ike goes down. Is it Dykstra or Duda?

(I am sure the Mets are trying to move Lucas)

David Rubin said...

Holt will probably be grabbed in the Rule V as well- like Ramirez was - by a team who thinks they can "straighten him out' (Wherever Rick Peterson is, lol)...so that means we can buy him back prior to the season starting but would probably let him go to the team that claimed him. At this point, he mostly represents hopes lost...

Mack Ade said...

Per David Rubin - Duda removed

David Rubin said...

I STILL say Duda is part of the team next yr, Mack, and backs up Davis at first and Bay platoon in left. Campbell's only chance is if they keep cedeno and move turner.

Craig Brown said...

Why not keep Flores or Marte or both at AA? There both still only 21, and neither are dominating the level. Also, in regards to A-Rod..Why not shift him to first now? I'm sick of watching young kids learn a new position in Queens(Duda,Murphy). Nobody thinks he can stay at third, and it seems like he has the bat for first.

Mack Ade said...

David, with more thought, I agree that Duda isn't a minor leaguer anymore, and I would love for him to become a productive member of the 2013 Mets outfield (which might not take much considering what they currently have)... but I'm move him in a heartbeat for a AA-top line prospect at either 2B, C, or LHSP

Mack Ade said...

okay Craig... before we move either Flores or Marte...

FACT - Tejada will be the Mets SS for 5+ years, baring injury

who do you keep on SS as his "emergency" fill-in in case he goes down long term? That person must play SS at AAA.

Next ...

assuming that... FACT - Wright will be Mets 3Bman 5+ years

again, who will be his 3B backup and play there at AAA maybe forever? You can't ask the Mets to waste Flores there, right?

FACT: Flores failed miserably as a SS... that's not an option

FACT: Flores can't run so corner OF positions are out... he is the best bat in the system but limited to 3B (behind Wright for maybe forever), 1B (behind Davis for le, forever), or what?

FACT: Marte couldn't carry Flores' bat.

David Rubin said...

I am proposing a trade- the first in our war room- so let's get those opinions in before I "pull the trigger" --

Wilmer Flores, Pena, Holt, Mazzoni, Mateo and Lutz to Toronto for:

SP Daniel Norris (L)
and
Travis D'Arnaud (C)

Discuss...

Charles said...

I pray Flores bat continues to shine and package him with another player( Gorski,Havens) to grab a outfielder. Someone else must have an odd man out and is looking for good future infielder with an impact bat. The mets must move these chess pieces around to make this game work if they want to compete on the field without competing in the free agent market.

Mack Ade said...

Okay...

Charles and David have taken the War Room in the direction I've been writing about for quite awhile.

The Mets have pleny of talent in their system, but it's either as an excess pitcher or 3Bman

I don't see a future for Flores with the Mets (if you resign Wright and stay with Ike). He would be the biggest trade chip other than one of the young pitchers.

I love David's trade because the team doesn't lose any chip. Everybody on that list is expendable and it would benefit both teams.

Naturally, we don't have the power to trade anyone, but can we agree that's it's time to get on the phones.

My five trading chips: Flores, Duda, Pill, Mateo, Mazzoni

Kevin Anderson said...

Do you think that the overall results in the Mets' system appear to better because of the effort to slow the system down, the change in philosophy / minor league coordinators, better talent at all levels, or some combination of all of the above?

Craig Brown said...

David--The Jays have maybe the best farm system in the game and have no use for Pena, Holt, or Lutz. I think D'Arnaud is attainable..but not Norris.

Craig Brown said...

Mack--Do you consider Mazzoni, Mateo, and Pill to be at their peak value?

David Rubin said...

Craig- agreed- they'd simply be cannon-fodder to fill out their system. However, Lutz could potentially be a 1b-3b at major league level for them.

Quite frankly, I'd add Familia to the deal if it brought back Norris, and I would give up all 6 for just D'Arnaud if it came to that!

David Rubin said...

(Personally, I don't think either Mazzoni, Mateo or Pill has reached their peak value yet- curious to see if Mack agrees!)

Mack Ade said...

Kevin...

strangely, I give most of the credit so far to Omar and the people he picked.

I then credit Sandy and Depo for how they are being handled

Mack Ade said...

Mazzoni - he may just be starting to show his best stuff - my darkhorse

Mateo - I have him in the pen someday at best

Pill - might be going through a Gorski stage right now

Mack Ade said...

No, I understand where you are coming from, but only one person can play short and 99 out of 100 scouts project an iferior bat to Tejada here.

If we were basing shortstop on spectacular plays, Wilfredo Tovar would be the guy.
