Everything changed when
Mark Appel didn’t sign with the Pirates. We’re
going to add the projected 1st round at the end of this piece, but
this jut averages all the mocks out there. Only one has come out since the 2012
draft ended and guess who was projected to be the number one player chosen?
Appel isn’t the only player that returns for his senior season (OFs Brandon
Thomas and Mike Yastrzemski) so it’s going to take a few months for my
compilation to balance out. Me? I have Appel #1 overall, Yaz around #5 and
Thomas right behind him.
There’s a difference of
opinion out there regarding the quality of this draft. I’m not that excited
about it overall, though I am impressed with both the high school catchers and
outfielders overall.
P Karsten Whitson, Bobby Wahl, Clinton Holton, Ryan Stanek,
Stephen Gonsalves, SS Oscar Mercado, 3B Kris Bryant, and OFs Austin
Wilson and Austin Meadows are the only
players listed in everyone’s first round.
Player rising: 3B Cavan Biggio
Player already
declining: P Matt Vogel
You’re going to start
hearing the name of C-1B Corey Simpson. He was
the darling of the Area Code games. He’s out of Sweeny H.S., in Texas, and is
committed to Houston (fat chance). Big wood bat in a tough field that day.
It’s obvious that we
are less than two years away from this draft being dominated by high school
kids signing big bonuses. This will create a 2-3 delay in developing talent in
minor league systems (remember… playing senior high school vs. college junior
is like JV ball vs. High school). It will be interesting.
Here’s the projected
first round, as of today, with my guess as to three seniors:
1. Mark Appel – RHSP
2. Austin Meadows – OF
3. Mike Yastrzemski – OF
4. Jeremy Martinez – C
5. Brandon Thomas – OF
6. Ryne Syanek – RHSP
7. Austin Wilson – OF
8. Clinton Holton – RHSP
9. Karston Whitson – RHSP
10.

11.
Bobby Wahl – RHP
12.
Oscar Mercado – SS
13.
Colin Moran – 3B
14.

17.
William Abreu – OF
18.
Zach Collins – C
19.
Dominic Ficociello – 1B
20.
Austin Kubitza – RHP
21.
Adam Plutko – RHP
22.
Jonathan Crawford – RHP
23.
Dominic Smith – 1B
24.

Mack, where do you see the Mets picking? I actually want them to get a top 10 pick, and it would be awesome to see Kris Bryant fall to us. But, I don't know why I follow the draft, I waste like 2 damn months having my list of picks I would like the Mets to pick. Instead, every year, they chose some guy that I never want.
See? You have it all figured out
It really doesn't matter when the Mets pick becasue they never pick the obvious with their first pick.
There always seems to be some VP trying to cut his bones with some no name.
I've got the Mets in the 11th-14th pick range. This could still get you Bryant. The summer leagues have really truned on a lot of scouts to some new names you're going to start reading about.
The summer leagues are becoming more and more important to the draft process.
I enjoy these types of lists but there is one glaring omission: Sean Manaea, the lefty from Indiana State would go top five if the draft were tomorrow.
