LAST GAME: The Reading Phillies blasted two homers and scored five unanswered runs to defeat the Binghamton Mets 5-2 on Sunday night at FirstEnergy Stadium. The R-Phils hit seven home runs and handed Binghamton three critical losses during the four-game series. The B-Mets scored two runs in the first two innings on one hit and three walks issued by starter Brody Colvin, but that was the extent of their offense. Darin Ruf got Reading on the board with a solo shot in the fourth against Mark Cohoon and Cody Asche gave the R-Phils the lead for good with a three-run bomb in the fifth. Reading added another run in the sixth on a sac fly. The B-Mets failed to score against Colvin, who went six innings to earn his first Double-A win. Juan Morillo and Jay Johnson combined for two scoreless innings. Justin Friend worked around a single and a walk to earn his 17th save of the season.

GAME ONE, STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Gonzalez Germen (6-8, 4.43) makes his 14th start of the season and second appearance against the Rock Cats. Germen suffered the loss in his last start against the Harrisburg Senators on August 1. The righty allowed three runs (two earned) on six hits over seven innings in a game the B-Mets lost 3-2. Germen struck out seven and walked one. He faced the Rock Cats as a piggy-back starter on May 24. Germen allowed two runs on two hits over three innings and took the loss.

RHP Steve Hirschfeld (7-6, 3.35) makes his 17th start of the season and third versus the B-Mets. He has lost two straight games after compiling a five-game winning streak. The Utah native fell in his last start against the Bowie Baysox on August 2. He allowed four runs (three earned) on seven hits over five innings, his shortest outing since May 21. Hirschfeld made six starts with the Rochester Red Wings (AAA) from early June to early July, going 1-3 with a 7.07 ERA.

GAME TWO, STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Cory Mazzoni (4-3, 3.12) makes his ninth start as a B-Met and first against the Rock Cats. The Pennsylvania native comes off a no-decision against the Harrisburg Senators on August 2. He matched a season-high by allowing ten hits over seven innings. He surrendered just three runs (two earned) and struck out four. Mazzoni’s last four starts have all come at home. In six total games at NYSEG Stadium Mazzoni has gone 2-3 with a 4.37 ERA. He has not allowed a run in two starts over 14 innings on the road.

LHP Andrew Albers (3-2, 3.77) makes his first start with New Britain since June 17. The lefty spent more than a month on the disabled list with a back injury. He made two rehab appearances with the GCL Twins (Rookie) before rejoining the Rock Cats rotation. The southpaw has made one start against the B-Mets, taking a no-decision on May 8. He allowed three runs on nine hits over five innings.

DOUBLEHEADER KING: B-Mets pitcher Cory Mazzoni will be making his fourth start this season in a doubleheader. In three doubleheader starts, the righty has gone 3-0 and compiled a 0.45 ERA (1 ER in 20.0 innings).

PACKING THE GAMES IN: Tonight is Binghamton’s sixth doubleheader of the season, second in the last four days and third in the last 12 days. The B-Mets have one day off for the rest of the season.

SNAPPED IN A PINCH: Dustin Martin’s 10-game hitting streak came to an end on Sunday night when he struck out as a pinch-hitter to end the game. Martin went 15-for-33 (.455) during the streak with five runs scored, two home runs and 11 RBI.

NOW OR NEVER: Of Binghamton’s 28 remaining games, 12 are scheduled against teams above them in the standings (New Britain, Reading & Trenton). The B-Mets currently sit 8.0 games out of a playoff berth in the Eastern Division.

NEXT GAME PREVIEW: The B-Mets continue their series against the Rock Cats tomorrow night at 6:35 PM. LHP Darin Gorski takes on LHP Aaron Thompson.
