Daily Mets Minors Report – 8-1-12

Date: 8-1-12

MLB –
Texas designated C Yorvit Torrealba for assignment
Philadelphia promotes OF Domonic Brown.
Marlins promoting Gorkys Hernandez
Hunter Pence‏ -  Thank you Philadelphia for all your support and passion. Excited to see what awaits me in San Francisco!
Shane Victorino‏ -  Mahalo to the Phillies and the AMAZING fans in Philly for a great run. A lot of unforgettable memories in this city. I'll miss you guys!
Elias Says Mike Trout is the 1st AL rookie to score 30 runs in one calendar month since Minnie Minoso in May 1951.
The Royals won the first selection July 17th in MLB's first-ever Competitive Balance Lottery. The Competitive Balance Lottery aims to give the ten smallest-market teams and ten lowest-revenue teams the opportunity to win extra draft choices. There was naturally some crossover between the two groupings, so a total of 13 teams participated: the Diamondbacks, Orioles, Indians, Royals, Athletics, Padres, Rays, Reds, Rockies, Marlins, Brewers and Cardinals. The Tigers were also eligible, though only for the selections after the second round. Wednesday's lottery determined that the Royals, Pirates, Diamondbacks, Orioles, Reds and Marlins will pick between the first and second rounds next year while the Padres, Indians, Rockies, Athletics, Brewers and Tigers will pick after the second round. The Cardinals and Rays did not receive a pick in either lottery round. Teams are able to trade picks from the Competitive Draft Lottery, which adds some extra intrigue to the upcoming July 31 non-waiver trade deadline.
MLB - Mets:
Scott Hairston - "I'm kind of glad I'm still here. Like I said last night, I'm having a lot of fun playing for the Mets and this is a great team to be a part of. I admit I didn't sleep as good as I thought I would last night. I kept staring at the clock. So I'll get that out of the way" – (I was hoping for a little more than ‘kind of glad:…)
Now, but there’s something amazing about a professional sports draft that allows for even the outside possibility that somebody selected after 1,497 other big league hopefuls can actually make it to the highest level. Josh Edgin, a lefthanded starting pitcher from Francis Marion University (by way of Ohio State), was drafted in the fiftieth (50th!) round in 2009. Think about how crazy that is for a moment: Edgin was deemed not quite good enough to get drafted 1,497 times over before the Braves pulled the trigger with the 1,498th overall pick. A little perspective here: only 14 of the 49 2009 first round (including the supplemental round) picks have reached the big leagues. Many more seem like stone cold locks to make their big league debuts in the not too distant future – Tony Sanchez, Zack Wheeler, Shelby Miller, Grant Green, and Tyler Skaggs, just to name a few – while others face seemingly insurmountable roads to even crack a AAA roster (we’ll withhold names to protect the innocent, but a quick look at this list is quite revealing) before they hang up the spikes. Future progress of these first rounders aside, there’s something special about beating the majority of your draft class’ first round picks to the big leagues. http://baseballdraftreport.com/2012/07/30/josh-edgin-from-round-50-to-citi-field/
Kevin Goldstein ‏- Hate the fact that the Mets won't trade Hairston. Screams of ownership meddling to win 82 and prevent GM from building for future.
Dodgers have designated LHP Michael Antonini for assignment.
AAA – Buffalo:
RHP Collin McHugh takes the mound for his ninth start of the season. The righty is coming off his best start of the year after tossing 6.2 shutout innings in Louisville on July 25 (5H, BB, 6K). McHugh has registered three consecutive quality starts (7/15 @PAW, 7/20 vCHA, 7/25 @LOU). In those outings, the righty is 0-1 with a 2.89ERA and 18K in 18.2 innings.
Tuesday
Could there be anything more painful than an extra-inning Bisons’ game?
2B Josh Satin hit his 11th home run and 3B-1B Zach Lutz adds his 7th.
I’ll leave it at 4-4
AA-Binghamton:
Peter Gammons‏ -  In the last 2 deadlines, Zach Wheeler may turn out to be the best longterm acquisition
RHP Zack Wheeler (9-6, 3.29) makes his 19th start of the season and second against the Harrisburg Senators. Wheeler comes off a loss to the New Britain Rock Cats on July 25. He matched a career-high by allowing ten hits. The righty surrendered six runs (five earned) over four innings and watched his ERA rise above 3.00 for the first time since the middle of April. In his last two starts Wheeler has allowed 13 earned runs over 7.2 innings (15.26 ERA). Wheeler defeated the Senators on June 7, allowing just one unearned run on two hits over seven innings.
RHP Paul Demny (6-6, 5.40) takes the mound for his 22nd start this season and second against the B-Mets. Demny lost his last start to the New Hampshire Fisher Cats on July 25. The Texas native allowed five runs (four earned) on six hits and five walks over five innings. Demny is searching for his first win in the last five starts with his most recent victory coming against the Altoona Curve on June 27. Demny took a no-decision against the B-Mets on June 5, conceding four runs on six hits over six innings of work in a game Harrisburg would 9-6. Demny was selected in the 6th round of the 2008 draft by the Nationals out of Blinn College (JC) in Brenham, Texas.
OF Raul Reyes was transferred from Buffalo.
INF Mike Fisher was placed on restricted list (leaving team without permission)…  this is never a good sign
Tuesday
Well, it looks like Wheeler went out of AA with a bang: 11-Ks in 6.2-IP. And, I loved the two that followed him… C.J. Nitkowski (0.00) and Frank Francisco (4.91). Francisco struck out the side. And then you end it with another scoreless outing by Adam Kolarek (0.00). A great pitching night!
Jefry Marte moved over to 1B and let loose tonight: 3-4, 1-R, double, RBI, .270.
3B Wilmer Flores 1-3, 2-R, BB, .280
2B Reese Havens  0-3, .227
A+ - St. Lucie: -
Tuesday
I’ve talked to Savannah’s pitching coach, Frank Viola, about a lot of Mets pitching prospects, but no one gets more praise out of him than Rafael Montero. Montero was dominant in Savannah this season (12-starts, 6-3, 2.52, 71.1-IP, only 8-BB). Montero doesn’t throw the ball past you. Instead, as Viola put it, “he has an incredible fastball with command.”
Tonight will make headlines tomorrow.
Montero had 14-Ks in 6.0-IP. Most of the time it really doesn’t matter in the minors what the final score is. Tonight was one of those nights.
3B Aderlin Rodriguez  0-4, .206
RF Cory Vaughn  0-3, .240
C Blake Forsythe  1-3, .260
LF Travis Taijeron is having a tough time adjusting to A+ ball. 1-4 tonight, hitting .216

A – Savannah: -
Tuesday
Another superbly pitched game… SP Jacob deGrom started it off (7.0-IP, 1-ER, 4-H, 5-K) followed by Estarlin Moral 1.0-IP, 0-R, and T.J. Chism (2.0-IP, 0-R).
The problem was that Greensboro was throwing up the same 1-R, 10-IP numbers.
Time for a Dustin Lawley walk-off single.
A-Low – Brooklyn:

Tuesday – night off…
Rookie – Kingsport:
Tuesday – Postponed
Rookie – DSL Mets:
SP Adrian Almeida (born 1995!) – 5.0-IP, 1-ER, 2.94
