Sand Gnats Split Doubleheader

TheSavannah Sand Gnats split a doubleheader with the Greensboro GrasshoppersWednesday at Historic Grayson Stadium, winning the opener 5-2 and dropping thenightcap 1-0 in two seven-inning games. The Gnats and Hoppers finish theirfour-game set Thursday night.

In game two, the Grasshoppers (17-23/63-47) scored the game’s onlyrun in the top of the seventh inning off reliever Carlos Vazquez. CF BrentKeys, the South Atlantic League’s leading hitter, flipped a one-out singleinto left field to drive home C TonyCaldwell.

The Gnats (18-22/59-48) collected just four hits in the nightcap,squandering another strong outing from LHP AlexPanteliodis. The former Gator threw six shutout innings with sevenstrikeouts and one walk to lower his ERA to 3.20. Panteliodis has struck out 26batters in his last 19 innings of work.

The ‘Hoppers scored first in game one, tallying two runs in thetop of the fourth inning against Savannah starter Michael Fulmer. C WilfredoGimenez drove home the second run with a RBI double into left.

The Gnats answered back in the bottom of the fourth with a foursingles, which led to a three-run frame, to take a 3-2 lead. 3B Brian Harrison and LF Dustin Lawley each picked up RBIsingles before RF Gregory Pronlifted a sacrifice fly to put the Gnats in front.

Fulmer, in his shortest start since May 25, lasted 4.2 innings. Heallowed two runs, both earned on seven hits, walked two and struck out two.

The Gnats tacked on two insurance runs in the bottom of the sixthof game one.
