#29 Ethan Petry
OF/1B South Carolina
20/years old
6' 4" 235
Scouting grades: Hit: 45 | Power: 60 | Run: 30 | Arm: 55 |
Field: 30 | Overall: 50
Petry interested scouts as both a slugger and a pitcher
during his Florida high school days but has focused on hitting since turning
down pro overtures and arriving at South Carolina. He set a Gamecocks freshman
record with 23 homers in 2023 and went deep 21 times more as a sophomore before
annihilating the Cape Cod League. He led the Cape in homers (11 in 31 games),
on-base percentage (.480), slugging (.760) and OPS (1.240) while winning MVP
honors from the league and top prospect accolades from scouts.
Petry generates plus-plus raw power with massive strength and
leverage from his 6-foot-4, 235-pound frame and an uphill right-handed stroke,
and he's capable of homering to any part of any ballpark. The caveat is that he
chases pitches excessively, swinging and missing inside and outside of the
zone, though he will take walks when opponents pitch around him. He struggled
with pitches at the top of and above the strike zone last spring but made
adjustments and hammered them with wood bats on the Cape.
With his power-over-hit profile and lack of athleticism,
Petry draws comparisons to Pete Alonso (with less bat speed) on the high end
and Seth Beer (with less plate discipline) on the low end. He's a
well-below-average runner with extremely limited range in right field, though
he does have solid arm strength and was clocked up to 96 mph off the mound as a
prepster. He has played a serviceable first base at South Carolina and likely
will move there full-time once he turns pro.

18. Arizona Diamondbacks: Ethan Peltry, OF/1B, South Carolina
All Ethan Peltry does is rake. In his first two seasons with
South Carolina, Peltry hit 44 home runs, with 128 RBI and a 1.157 OPS in 124
games. He also showed out in the Cape Cod League, as he was named MVP after
posting 11 home runs and an outstanding 1.240 OPS in 31 games. He might be
limited defensively, but you’re taking him for his bat, and he could be a quick
riser in the Arizona Diamondbacks system.

No. 27 Cleveland Guardians: Ethan Petry, OF/1B, South
Carolina Baseball
In two seasons, Petry has hit .341/.471/.686 with 44 home
runs.
The Cape Cod League MVP hit 11 more this past summer, and
he's another player who could climb high in this draft.
The Mets, Yankees and Dodgers first-round draft picks are
pushed back 10 spots due to exceeding the competitive balance tax in 2024 by
more than $40 million. So, this pick technically ends the first round.

MLB 2025 Mock Draft 2.0: Predictions for Every 1st-Round Pick
13. San Francisco Giants: OF Ethan Petry, South Carolina
After posting a 1.157 OPS with 44 home runs and 128 RBI in
124 games during his first two seasons at South Carolina, Petry gave his draft stock
a further boost last summer when he hit .360/.480/.760 with 11 home runs and 25
RBI in 31 games in the Cape Cod League to take home MVP honors. The 6'4",
235-pound slugger is limited athletically and he struck out at a 25.3 percent
clip last spring, but his playable power is tough to ignore.

36. Ethan Petry – 1B
HT/WT: 6’4/235 | Bat/Throw: R/R | School: South Carolina |
Age: 21
Petry burst onto the scene as a freshman at South Carolina,
smashing 23 home runs and slashing .376/.471/.733 in 63 games.
2024 was much the same in the power department, as he hit 21
home runs in 61 games, but opposing pitching exploited some holes in Petry’s
swing, causing a drop in pure contact and a rise in strikeouts. He did walk at
a higher clip, but he was susceptible to velocity up in the zone and spin.
That continued on the Cape with Yarmouth-Dennis, posting a
swinging strike rate of over 17%. While the hit tool may be below-average,
Petry’s power grades out as plus and plays to all fields. The power is his
carrying tool.
Defensively, Petry has gotten opportunities in a corner
outfield spot with South Carolina, though his route-running can get adventurous
and many believe his physicality and lack of speed will relegate him to a first
base role.
He’s had opportunities at third base this fall, though scouts
have noted clunky footwork at the position. However, his Cape MVP will carry
significant weight in his evaluation this summer.

29. Ethan Petry, 1B, South Carolina
Big-time power to profile at first, hitting 11 home runs in
125 plate appearances in the Cape. It’s a power-over-hit profile with some
swing-and-miss concerns, but the elite raw power and success in the SEC
legitimize him as a first-round prospect. He plays some right field for USC but
his future is at first base.
1-6-25 - 5 way too early 2025 MLB Draft prospects to
target with Brewers' glut of early picks
Ethan Petry, OF, South Carolina
The MVP of the Cape Cod League in 2024, Ethan Petry has raw
power to spare and is one of the best power hitters in this year's draft class.
Petry's not all that dissimilar to another Brewers prospect, Brock Wilken, who
also won the Cape Cod League MVP a few years ago. The Brewers do love high
performers on the Cape, and Petry should go around the range of the Brewers
early picks.
It's a power-over-hit profile and Petry is a corner profile
only on defense. He has a strong enough arm to play right field but his limited
speed and range likely will limit Petry to first base in the major leagues.
Petry is going to be among the country's leaders in home runs this season and
the Brewers will likely be keeping a close eye on him.

2025 Draft - B/R's Way-Too-Early 2025 MLB Mock Draft –
7. Detroit Tigers: OF Ethan Petry, South Carolina
Petry has been a standout offensive performer in the SEC over
his first two seasons at South Carolina, posting a .341/.471/.686 line with 44
home runs and 128 RBI in 124 games as a two-year starter.
He has continued to raise his profile by putting up a gaudy
.360/.480/.760 line with 11 home runs in 31 games in the Cape Cod League this
summer.
The 6'4", 230-pound slugger might end up limited to
first base defensively, but his bat will play anywhere.

Ethan Petry had a big
day -- a home run, two hits and three RBIs as Gamecock Basebll rebounds from
the A&M series with a road series win over Florida. As for the Gators, they
are officially in scramble mode.
